Iberdrola Renovables Offshore Deutschland GmbH has

awarded a contract to Prysmian Group to supply and

install wind turbine inter-array cables for the Wikinger

offshore wind farm, located within the West of Adlergrund

cluster in the German Baltic Sea.

In May 2014 Prysmian Group was awarded a contract with

50Hertz Offshore GmbH to design, produce and install

multiple 220kV HVAC 3-core extruded submarine cable

systems between the planned offshore wind parks within

the West of Adlergrund cluster.

Under the Wikinger contract, Prysmian will design,

manufacture, install and test a total 81km of 33kV

submarine cables in different cross-sections to connect

the 70 wind turbines and an offshore substation that form

the 350MW wind farm.

Cables will be produced in Prysmian’s facility in Drammen,

Norway, and installation works are scheduled to be

completed by the end of 2016.

Copper and cable

booming?

THE UAE ministry of economy’s latest report states that

copper exports contribute approximately $1 billon to

UAE’s trade surplus. It has been revealed that there is a

difference of just $5 million between volumes of copper

cable exports of the USA ($1.33 billion) and the UAE

($1.325 billion), taking the UAE to a global fifth position,

after the USA.

Participants at Wire and Cable Arabia 2015 acknowledged

the investment opportunities offered in the sector in the

UAE and wider region, despite a slowdown in other parts

of the world.

Satish Khanna, the general manager of Al Fajer

Information and Services, organisers of Wire and Cable

Arabia 2015, said: “The cable industry in the UAE is

competitive, mature, expenditure-driven and caters to

almost all sectors of the economy. It has gone through a

phase of rapid growth that has encouraged new players to

enter the sector.

“The key growth drivers of the UAE’s cable industry are

the booming infrastructure and utilities spending, telecom

liberalisation, demand for electricity, government

subsidies, and export opportunities.”

Mr Khanna explained: “The types of cables produced in

the UAE are energy cables, instrumentation cables, power

and control cables, industrial cables and communications

cables. Wire and Cable Arabia 2015 was able to connect

serious buyers with local manufacturers to accelerate

export processes.”
