The Atlantic Wind Connection has selected Bechtel to be the EPC
contractor for the New Jersey Energy Link, the first offshore electricity
transmission system to be built in the United States. Alstom will be
the key equipment supplier for the landmark project, which will link
energy resources and users in northern, central, and southern New
Jersey.
Bechtel will engineer and install onshore transmission lines and
substations, two onshore converter stations, and two offshore
converter stations. The company will also oversee the offshore
installation of the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter
technology and HVDC cables that will span the length of New
Jersey and carry 3,000MW of electricity. The project will improve
the reliability of New Jersey’s existing power grid and lays the
infrastructure for offshore wind to be delivered onshore.
Construction will begin in 2016 with service scheduled to begin
in 2019. Led by transmission developer Trans-Elect with equity
support from Bregal Energy, Google, Marubeni, and Elia, the New
Jersey Energy Link is the first phase of the multi-year Atlantic Wind
Connection offshore wind transmission project. This high-voltage,
DC subsea backbone transmission system will ultimately span the
mid-Atlantic coast.
