Henry Barry's letter, 6th March, 1985, March
Gazette,
was quite interesting. During the Society's Centenary
Celebrations research disclosed that my firm at 22 Denny
Street, Tralee, was the oldest established Law Firm in the
32 Counties. (Francis Creagh Downing qualified in
Easter Term, 1860.) When I joined it in 1950 it was then

F. & C. Downing' and I became a partner with the late
Charles J. Downing, a Vice President of the Society (he
had been a partner with his uncle, Francis Downing). I
became the 'F' in the Firm then with Charlie Downing,
continuing the trade as 'F. & C. Downing'. Following
Charlie's death it became Downing, Grace and Courtney,
is now Downing and Grace — hence I lost the title ' F'
some years ago.
My congratulations to Henry Barry and I wish his
practice good luck into the 21st Century.
