GAZETTE

JULY/AUGUST 1985

are investigating the possibility of arranging for

Companies Office Searches to be dealt with by way

of Telex, and this could greatly relieve the present

frustration for the public and for the profession.

As I said earlier in this Address, we live in changing

times, and we in the Law Society are anxious to move

with, or ahead of those times, provided that such progress

is in the interests of the public and ourselves, and does not

affect the fundamental values which we as Solicitors hold.

As an example of this, we have been pressing for over a

year now for legislation to involve lay people in the

Committees we have which deal with complaints. As the

newest members of this profession, we look to you for

positive ideas and support, just as we hope that you will

look to us for guidance in some situations, where the

experience of older members is irreplaceable, but it is

essential for all of us to keep considering and reflecting on

changes which will be of benefit, both in large and small

matters. As a result of becoming Solicitors to-day, a fee

will have to be paid for your Practising Certificate. It

would not surprise me if within a few years time that fee

will be paid by Credit Card, and the same could well apply

to costs charged to clients by Solicitors.

Before concluding, I would like to turn to one sad and

serious matter. A week ago to-day, Sgt. Morrissey was

shot dead in the course of his duty. This is the first public

occasion on which I have spoken since his death, and I

want to take this opportunity to convey the deepest

sympathy of the Incorporated Law Society of Ireland and

its members to the family of Sgt. Morrissey. I wish also to

pass this message on to the Commissioner of the Gardai

Siochana and to the Association of Garda Sergeants and

Inspectors. In doing so, I would like to convey to them the

condemnation of the Solicitors' Profession of this brutal

killing, and our support for the Gardai Siochana in doing

their duty which often involves difficult and dangerous

work.

Finally, it gives me real pleasure, on behalf of the

Council of the Incorporated Law Society of Ireland, to

congratualte you all, and to welcome you to the

profession. I hope that you will find your work as a

Solicitor interesting and rewarding, and that you w

; n

serve the public with conscientiousness, humanity and

efficiency. I hope too that those who have given such

support to you will feel that it has all been worth while. •
