Concerns that CGI dinosaurs
had lost their ‘wow’ factor in the
20-plus years since Spielberg’s
groundbreaking
Jurassic Park
were squashed like a brontosaur
stomping on an ant when this
franchise reboot quickly shot to
the number three position on the
all-time box office chart, with a
worldwide gross of $1.6 billion.
John Hammond’s dream of a
dinosaur Disneyland has finally
been realised; the park (now World) is open for business
and a massive tourist attraction. But these days kids would
rather stare at their smartphones than a stegosaurus,
creating the need for a genetically engineered designer
dinosaur – the Indominus Rex – that’s bigger, badder and
scarier than anything that walked the earth 65 million years
ago. Needless to say, this hybrid super-predator will not
be contained and quickly escapes, threatening the safety
of visitors and staff. Functioning as a direct sequel to the
1993 original (and packed with numerous nods that fans will
enjoy),
Jurassic World
is a movie as massive as its resident
dinosaurs and star Chris Pratt’s charisma. The first worthy
successor to Spielberg’s classic.

JURASSIC WORLD
Arnold Schwarzenegger returns
to his signature role in this
action blockbuster/reboot that
smashes and mashes up the
events of
The Terminator
and
T2:
Judgment Day
in an alternate
universe that rewrites the series’
mythology. The opening recreates
James Cameron’s original, but
when another Arnie Terminator
unexpectedly appears along
with a liquid metal T-1000, and
Sarah Connor (
GoT
’s Emilia Clarke) tells Kyle Reese (Jai
Courtney) to “come with me if you want to live”, we’re
suddenly in exciting new territory. It’s The Terminator,
but not as we know it. In this parallel timeline, Arnie’s
Terminator has been Sarah’s guardian since she was
a child, and Judgement Day is now set to occur two
decades later in 2017. This necessitates another time
jump into a future where Skynet is now a global
operating system called Genisys, poised to go online
in a matter of hours, and a new model nano-Terminator
pursues our heroes as they attempt to destroy
Cyberdyne Systems.
Terminator Genisys
upgrades the
franchise for the digital age, but in tampering with the
timeline, it becomes a temporal paradox. The future has
been well and truly reset.
