BLU-RAY

ROUND-UP

The Marvel Cinematic

Universe might be

taking over the world,

but some Marvel

heroes haven't fared

as well on screen as

Iron Man, Thor, et al.

Vigilante Frank Castle,

aka The Punisher, is one of them,

probably due to his penchant for

torture and murder in the fight

against crime – " If society won't

punish the guilty, he will!" The

Punisher's first screen appearance

was in 1989, as played by Dolph

Lundgren, in a cheesy action flick

shot in Sydney that has since

become a cult favourite. Fans are

well served by the Blu-ray release of

The Punisher

, which features three

cuts of the film – the Theatrical

Version (in HD), Unrated Cut (in

SD) with added violence and

gore, and the Workprint (in SD),

which expands on the character's

backstory. Extras include audio

commentary with director Mark

Goldblatt on the Unrated Cut,

interviews with Goldblatt

and Dolph, gag reel, and

theatrical trailer. Other

incarnations of the

character include Thomas

Jane's take in 2004, and

Ray Stevenson in

The

Punisher: War Zone

(2008)

– both available on Blu-

ray. And John Bernthal (

The Walking

Dead

) will play Frank Castle in a TV

series that's due next year.

Arriving on

October 5 for

Halloween are a

pair from Hammer

Horror –

Scream

of Fear

(1961)

and

The Gorgon

(1964) – as well

as a Special Edition of David

Cronenberg's adaptation of

Stephen King's

The Dead

Zone

(1983), which includes

audio commentary by Stephen

Jones and film critic Kim

Newman, and the featurettes

Memories from The Dead

Zone, The Look of The Dead

Zone, Visions and Horror from The

Dead Zone and The Politics of The

Dead Zone

(available Oct 5).

With all the new releases reviewed elsewhere in the magazine, this column focuses
