Speech pathologists
at
the new Gold Coast University
Hospital were excited to host
a Speech Pathology Open
Day on 27 February 2014.
Due to ever-expanding Gold
Coast speech pathology
networks, we welcomed
the wider speech pathology
community to the new
hospital as an opportunity to
demonstrate the services we
have to offer.
Visiting speech pathologists
were treated to a grand tour
of the $1.7 billion hospital
followed by a delicious
afternoon tea.
Highlights of the tour included
paediatric outpatients, adult
outpatients, the emergency
department, the allied health
hub, acute speech pathology
hub, rehabilitation speech
pathology hub, the outpatient
rehabilitation gymnasium and
the inpatient rehabilitation
ward, not to mention the
extensive food court.
Visiting speech pathologists
were particularly interested
in the self-contained room
in the rehabilitation ward
that allows patients to
practise independent
living and the availability
of technology across
the hospital, especially
the bedside Patient
Entertainment Systems (PES).
However, we were especially
pleased with the enthusiastic
response to the innovative
research within the speech
pathology service and
our speech pathology
rehabilitation facilities that
allow for individual, group and
computer-based intervention.
We would be happy to
provide further information
about our new facilities
and services to our speech
pathology colleagues upon
request.

In very exciting news
,
Claire Bolton, a UQ Speech
Pathology graduate, was
presented with a Churchill
medallion at a prestigious
biennial award ceremony in
London in May 2014, after
successfully completing her
Winston Churchill Travelling
Fellowship.
The Winston Churchill
Travelling Trust and
Fellowship was established
shortly after Sir Winston’s
death in 1965, as his
national memorial and
living legacy. Since then
it has awarded over 4820
Travelling Fellowships. The
Winston Churchill Travelling
Fellowships directly support
British citizens who want
to travel overseas to gain
knowledge, experience
and best practice to benefit
others in their professions
and communities, and
society as a whole.
Ms Bolton was presented
with a Churchill medallion by
Guest of Honour, Dame Mary
Peters DBE, Olympic gold
medal winning pentathlete
and a 1972 Churchill
Fellow herself. Dame Mary
presented 113 Fellows
with their medallions at a
ceremony in Church House,
in Central London.
As part of her Fellowship,
Ms Bolton travelled to
Canada and the US to
investigate using music
and singing within speech
pathology to improve
clients’ communication
skills. Claire currently has a
speech pathology practice
on Harley Street (London)
and another in Chesham
(Buckinghamshire) where she
is successfully collaborating
with Neurologic Music
Therapists.
Speaking about the
Fellowship, she said,
“The Travelling Fellowships
provide opportunities for
British citizens to go abroad
on a worthwhile enterprise
of their own choosing, with
the aim of enriching their
lives through wider
experience – and to bring
back the benefit to others
in their UK profession or
community through sharing
the results of their new
knowledge.”
