Kingsman: The Secret Service
is
another collaboration between
director Matthew Vaughn and comic
book writer Mark Millar, following
their 2010 superhero romp
Kick-Ass
.
Blending a hefty dose of James
Bond with the cartoonish violence
of their previous film, the result is
every bit as entertaining and brings
Millar and artist Dave Gibbons’
Secret Service
comic book series
to energetic life. When one of its
top operatives (who are all named after Arthurian knights)
is killed in action, the eponymous British spy organisation
seeks a suitable replacement – specifically the wayward
son of the late agent, Eggsy (Taron Eggerton). Following
a punishing recruitment process, Eggsy is despatched to
prevent lisping megalomaniac Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson)
from inciting global violence via mind-controlling sim cards.
The jury’s still out on SLJ’s villain, but the rest of the cast is
excellent, including Colin Firth as the lethal but gentlemanly
Galahad, Mark Strong as Merlin (Kingsman’s version of
Q), and the great Michael Caine as their leader, Arthur.
Newcomer Eggerton is also good as the laddish rogue
turned superspy. A sequel, please. • See page 40

KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE
Are ya ready, kids?
The
SpongeBob Movie; Sponge Out
of Water
is one of the most
eye-opening things you’ll see
for a long time. Despite the
title, most of the movie takes
place underwater, and whether
it’s dolphin rap battles, time
travelling, alternate realities or
bad puns, it’s safe to say there’s
pretty much something for
everyone in this feature-length 3D rendering of Bikini
Bottom. Starring the voice actors from the series –
Tom Kenny as SpongeBob, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick,
and Rodger Bumpass (yes, that’s really his name) as
Squidward – with guest star Antonio Banderas as
Burger Beard, it’s not as if the film strays from the
Nickelodeon series’ perennially bonkers template. The
show was as popular with adults as with little ones,
perhaps due to its weird, almost illicit substance-
induced fervour, and things haven’t changed. Bigger
and crazier than 2004’s
The SpongeBob SquarePants
Movie,
this offers as much fun as
The Lego Movie
in
terms of hilarious sight gags and one-liners. In other
words, fun for all the family. • See page 42
