Method Title:
Determination of Anthocyanins in Brazilian and Floridian
Açaí (Euterpe oleraceae Mart) Using LC-MS/MS
Method Author(s):
FDA (Kevin Tran, Ralph H. Vocque and Robert E. Smith)
Reviewer Name:
Melissa Phillips
Summary of Method
Method describes a semi-quantitative LC-MS/MS method
for determination of Cy3Glu and Cy3Rut in Acai fruit
products for authentication.
Method Scope / Applicability:
Scope is only to acai products (which are not included in
SMPR scope except as part of the exclusivity panel) and/or
only based on Cy3Glu and Cy3Rut. Applicability to other
products (or exclusion of non-Vaccinium) is not
demonstrated or likely.
General Comments About the
Method:
Great as a quick method for detecting adulteration in acai
products; not a great fit for the SMPR
Method Clarity
clear as stated
Pros/Strengths
simple and fast; seems to work well for acai
Cons/Weaknesses
does not meet the needs of SMPR. Chromatography likely
cannot be extended to include the necessary Vaccinium
anthocyanins without significant extra work. Applicability
not demonstrated to the authenticity and exclusivity panels.
