While we’re still pretending that Ben Affleck venture from
2003 doesn’t exist, the Daredevil television series manages
to do significantly more justice (sorry) to the unassuming
character of Matt Murdock. Left blind following a childhood
accident, Murdock was forced to hone his remaining
senses, resulting in a superhuman transition that gives
him ridiculously good hearing and a steely facade. Charlie
Cox stars as the lawyer by day – with his old mate Foggy
Nelson (it’s Fulton from
The Mighty Ducks
!) and ring-in
Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) – and crime-fighter by night,
who intends to take down the delinquent ring led by the illustrious Wilson
Fisk (the brilliant Vincent D’Onofrio).
Daredevil
is gripping comic book TV for
the more mature Marvel fans out there – especially those that enjoy a good,
brutal alleyway beating. Hell’s Kitchen better keep an eye out.

DAREDEVIL:
SEASON 1
Release Date:
07/12/16
Format:
Kyle Barnes (Patrick Fugit) is an outcast. He's been plagued
by diabolical forces since he was a child and now lives a
life of solitude in Rome, West Virginia. But the Devil isn't
done with him yet – the town is a magnet for demonic
possession, and Kyle's past experience makes him the
perfect partner to assist the local reverend (Philip Glenister) in
casting out unclean spirits. Based on the comic book series
by Robert Kirkman (
The Walking Dead
),
Outcast
combines
blood-curdling exorcism and small town drama into a creepy
package that's full of truly disturbing moments. The cast is
great, too: Glenister's southern preacher (who smokes and swears like a
trooper) is an absolute blast, as is baritone-voiced Reg E. Cathey as the chief
of police. And
Star Trek
's Brent Spiner also pops up as an agent of evil. Fans
of
American Horror Story
are advised to check this out.

OUTCAST:
SEASON 1
Release Date:
07/12/16
Format:
Following the astronomical success of
Daredevil
,
Marvel unleashed
Jessica Jones
with all the grit it could
muster. The title character (Krysten Ritter) is a hard-ass,
whiskey-gulping P.I. in sleazy Hell’s Kitchen, where
her sole protector is her super strength. But it’s no
help when her mind-controlling stalker, Kilgrave (David
Tennant), resurfaces and her horrific past with the Devil
comes to light. Without the odd throwaway line linking
it back to the MCU, you could be forgiven for thinking
this psychotic addition isn't part of the same universe
as
The Avengers
. Ritter is as wickedly good as Tennant is terrifying –
every word he hisses is full of shiver-inducing venom. This is addictive
viewing but you may need a shower afterwards – the down and dirty
tone will leave you feeling grimy.

JESSICA JONES:
SEASON 1
Release Date:
07/12/16
Format:
Sadly,
Penny
has been dropped by Showtime and it's
dreadful that one of the best horror series on TV has
come to an end after only three seasons. In this last
hurrah, Dracula's seduction of Vanessa Ives triggers
the end of days. As darkness falls over London, Victor
Frankenstein enlists the help of fellow doctor Henry
Jekyll to find a cure for Lily, who is becoming increasing
more unhinged. Elsewhere, The Creature attempts to
reconnect with his family and Ethan Chandler returns
tothe American West, where he discovers his Apache
heritage and the pivotal role he must play in the oncoming apocalypse.
John Logan's high concept period saga brought horror literature's
greatest creations together in a manner that wasn't contrived, and Eva
Green's tragic clairvoyant Vanessa was its bloody heart and soul.
