This
is
conducted
after
the
following
plan
:
—
Take
8
pounds
of
unslaked
lime
;
put
it
into
a
pail
or
tub,
and
pour
on
it
3
quarts
of
water
to
dissolve
it
:
in
about
an
hour
after
add
3
gallons
more
of
water,
and
let
it
stand
for
twenty-four
hours.
Then
pour
the
fine
off
into
a
cask,
and
put
a
cock
in
it,
and
it
is
always
ready
for
use. It
is
the
impression
of
some
persons
that
lime
water
is
not
healthy,
but
it
is
now
pretty
generally
admitted
that
it
is
very
good
for
many
things
in
a
medicinal
point
of
view.
PROCESS
OF
MAKING
SULPHURIC
ETHER.
This
very
useful
medicinal
preparation,
which
is
ex-
tensively
used
at
the
present
day,
is
made
as
follows
:
Take
of
oil
of
vitriol
and
rectified
spirits
of
wine,
each
32
ounces.
Pour
the
spirit
into
a
glass
retort
that
will
bear
the
sudden
heat,
and
pour
the
acid
at
once
upon
it;
mix
them
gradually
and
cautiously
together
by
gently
shaking
the
retort,
and
immediately
distil
by
a
sand
heat
prepared
beforehand
for
that
purpose,
the
recipient
being
placed
in
a
vessel
of
snow
or
water.
The
fire
should
be
so
regulated
that
the
liquor
