GAZETTE

APRIL 1986

This is consulted from time to time by firms seeking

qualified legal staff. The service is free and kept up to

date.

For information on employment opportunities (either

in legal sections or the general administration areas)

within the Civil Service, enquiries should be addressed to:

Secretary,

Civil Service Commission,

1 Lower Grand Canal Street,

Dublin 2.

United States

Over recent years, an increasing number of Irish

solicitors have taken up legal employment in the United

States. In many states, the qualification as a solicitor in

the Republic especially if coupled with a law degree from

a university in the Republic will be accepted as meeting

part of the requirements of the Bar Admission Authorities

of the particular state. The Education Department of the

Society has a number of contacts mostly in New York

where some Irish solicitors have been admitted to the

Local Bar and others are in course of study for the Bar

Final Examination. Names and addresses can be supplied

on contacting the Education Officer of the Incorporated

Law Society of Ireland, Blackhall Place, Dublin 7.

Canada

The practice of law in each Province is regulated by

the legislation of that province. Being a Canadian citizen

or a British subject is a requirement in nearly all pro-

vinces. Several provinces recognise Irish University Law

Degrees. Further details may be had from the Canadian

Embassy, 65/68 St. Stephen's Green, Dublin 2, or from

the Society's Education Officer.

Australia

An Irish solicitor may apply to be admitted as a

solicitor in the State of Victoria, Australia and will

normally be admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in Victoria

on making application to the Court in that State and

following personal appearance before the Court. There

is no examination requirement nor is there any require-

ment as to previous practice.

Enquiries for admission to the Roll of Solicitors in the

State of Victoria may be made to:

The Law Institute of Victoria,

470 Bourke Street,

Melbourne,

Victoria 3000,

Australia.

or

The Board of Examiners,

Law Courts,

William Street,

Melbourne,

Victoria 3000,

Australia.

It is possible for a solicitor admitted in the State of

Victoria to move to other states of Australia on meeting

the requirements of those states. The most populous state

in Australia is New South Wales and enquiries should be

addressed to:

The Law Society of New South Wales,

170 Philip Street,

Sydney,

New South Wales 2000,

Australia.

An Irish solicitor who is not an Australian citizen

requires a work permit to practise in Australia. It is

understood that the Australian Authorities will not enter-

tain applications for work permits unless the applicant

has already secured a job which he will take up on

entering Australia. It is understood further that applica-

tions for work permits are better made through the

employer and no application should be made without

getting expert advice.

Hong Kong

There may be employment opportunities for Irish

solicitors in the Government Service in Hong Kong. The

qualification requirements to practise in Hong Kong are

so onerous as to make it very difficult for an Irish solicitor

to qualify as a solicitor in Hong Kong but it is not

necessary to be admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in Hong

Kong to be employed in the Government Legal Service.

Enquiries should be addressed to:

Assistant Commissioner (Appointments),

Hong Kong Government Office,

6 Grafton Street,

London W1X 3LB.
