T
he announcement of the nominees for
the 49th New Zealand Music Awards is
a timely remainder of just what a good
year 2014 has been for homegrown music.Yes,
Lorde inevitably casts a giant shadow over the
Vodafone-sponsored event – she’s up for fiveTuis
– but there are strong contenders in virtually
every music category.
And our world-conquering pop princess is not
the only nominee who has enjoyed success and
acclaim overseas. Popera sensations Sol3 Mio,
for example, are also up for five awards, while
Broods,The Naked And Famous andTiny Ruins
have picked up three a-piece. Other multiple
nominees include Ladi6 and David Dallas, who
have picked up four nominations apiece, Stan
Walker (3), Liam Finn (2), House Of Shem (2) and
TamaWaipara (2). And we’re also pleased to see
artists as diverse as Blacklistt, Doprah, @Peace
and Clap Clap Riot are also in the running at this
year’s VMNZA.
Hopefully, you will already have heard a fair
few of the nominated albums already, but if you
haven’t there is no need to wait until the awards:
you will always find the best homegrown music
at JB Hi Fi!
Of course, theTuis also offer the opportunity
to celebrate greats from the past as well and
Supergroove is the deserved recipient of this
year’s Legacy Award. You will be able to catch
them live next year on the winery tour, but if
you need a refresher course, now is the time to
perfect time revisit their greatest hits on CD.
The venue for this year’s awards is once again
Auckland’s Vector Arena and if you can’t make it
to the November 20 show, remember you can
watch all the action live on Four.
