MILLION AIR FLIGHT BRIEFING MEDFORD

Oregon art haven ONE OF THE SUNNIEST TOWNS IN AN AREA KNOWN FOR RAIN, MEDFORD, OREGON, IS AS QUAINT AS IT IS CAPTIVATING

WHERE TO SLEEP The Jacksonville Inn, just down the road from Medford, embodies Old West opulence at its finest and most authentic. Originally built in 1861, the inn is located in one of the Gold Rush era’s earliest permanent structures and, with its brick-and-red-awning facade, certainly looks the part. It’s not all about the past at the Jacksonville Inn, however, as a five-star restaurant and a guest list including former presidents make it a stay for the ages. 175 E California Street, Jacksonville, (541) 899-1900, jacksonvilleinn.com

Jazz Festival Medford

WHERE TO EAT Medford favorite Vinny’s Italian Kitchen is the perfect spot for such classic fare as veal pizzaiola and baked penne Siciliano. The restaurant’s owner, Vincenzo, has a strong history with Italian cuisine as he grew up near Naples and has owned Italian restaurants in both New York and Arizona before moving to Medford to be near his children. 970 North Phoenix Road, (541) 618-8669, vinnysitaliankitchenmedford.com WHERE TO FLY Located in a state-of-the-art facility, Million Air Medford is a full-service FBO with a history of excellence. A part of Rogue Valley International Airport, Million Air Medford was awarded Million Air FBO of the Year in 2008. Facilities and services include a theater, free daily health-club pass and a snooze room.

Grape Harvest Medford

The home in later life of movie star Ginger Rogers, Medford boasts a bustling art scene, including the Randall Theatre Company, the Rogue Opera and Collier Center for the Performing Arts. The latter is a live performance venue named after one of the area’s largest benefactors, James Collier. The town also plays host to the annual Medford Jazz Festival, held every October, which showcases big-name artists as well as young local musicians. For those who prefer the visual arts, Medford also offers two art galleries, Art du Jour Gallery and Rogue Gallery & Art Center, both of which display works from local artists in various styles. Of course no art critique is complete without a good glass of wine, and luckily Medford is one of the hubs of Oregon’s growing wine industry. RoxyAnn Winery, housed in east Medford’s Hillcrest Orchard, started small in 2002, but today produces close

to 15,000 cases of award-winning bottles — from Merlots to Cabernet Sauvignons — each year. In addition to luscious grapes for wine, Medford soil grows peaches and some of the country’s best pears, including Bosc, Bartlett and Comice varieties. These pears often find their way into the baskets of one of the area’s biggest employers, Harry & David. The company, founded back in 1910, is famous for its gift baskets of fruit and candies, and is open to the public for factory tours, which, of course, include tastes of the scrumptious sweets. Other local attractions include the Medford Carnegie Library, built in 1911 through a financial gift from Andrew Carnegie; the 100-acre Bear Creek Park, which boasts multiple tennis courts, a BMX track, an amphitheater, a skate park and a dog park; and Roxy Ann Peak, a 30 million-year-old dormant volcano named after one of the area’s earliest settlers.

MILLION AIR

Take off Welcome aboard and welcome to the world of Million Air! I have long felt that business jets are today’s cell phone…decades ago considered a luxury, now a vital, affordable and competitive tool. The cell phone has emerged from a pure luxury for those who could afford such a gadget to now be considered the most productive business tool in modern history. The business aircraft is very much the same…once looked upon as for only the rich and famous, the use of private aviation is the greatest corporate force multiplier, unlocking companies to improve productivity and gain market share, and used to drastically outperform competitors. People do business with people, and business aviation is the safest, most expeditious time and people transporter in existence, allowing business to flourish. I see further trends of leveraging technology to connect our industry, increasing demand and an ever-growing market. It’s an exciting time to be in private aviation. There are several factors that, when combined, are heating up the business aviation sector — mainly the combination of declining used aircraft prices, favorable tax climate, sector awareness and the improved economy as a whole. With used aircraft values at an all-time low, more companies are venturing into the market to acquire and unlock the power of private aviation. The improving economy, bolstered by recently passed tax laws, affords company executives both the confidence and the dollars to strike out for additional business tools as they seek to improve their company’s performance. Another dynamic, our tightly knit industry, has diversified tremendously over the past decade with the growth of fractional ownership, jet cards and now creative club memberships. There is a much wider customer base taking to the business aviation skies than in years past. I see a bright, rising future for our industry and believe that we will continue to unlock the under-recognized benefits that only business aviation can deliver. Million Air is proud to be the premier chain of luxury FBOs. We see our tasks clear — to establish the infrastructure and business strategies that deliver consistent service; decrease operating costs; and manage not only our brand but also your experience, image and reputation. Everyone here at Million Air looks forward to providing you with the service you expect and the opportunity to see you off on yet another safe journey to one of our fine FBOs.

Keep ’em flying…

The 64-acre ramp can serve unlimited types of aircraft from helicopter operations to military deployments, and Million Air can handle and park aircraft from Cessna 150s to KC-135s, DC-10s, L1011s, C5s, C17s and the larger Antonov aircraft.

Lake Charles enjoys a reputation as the unofficial capital of Cajun Country, thanks to more than 75 annual fairs and festivals (the most in the South), tranquil golf greens, thrilling casino gaming and an up-and-coming culinary scene. French settler Martin LeBleu and his wife became the first European residents of this cultural capital in 1781, laying the foundation for the rich Franco-inflected heritage known as Cajun or Acadian culture. This means spicy jambalaya, zydeco music and Mardi Gras. In fact, the city’s Mardi Gras celebration rivals that of New Orleans. Lake Charles’s Lenten holiday features similarly spectacular costumes, fun-filled parades and festive activities as the original, but with a decidedly local touch. In that same vein of thrilling decadence, Lake Charles is home to some of the region’s most

popular gaming establishments. Delta Downs Racetrack, the Isle of Capri Casino, and L’Auberge Casino Resort, Lake Charles all offer riverboat- and track-based gambling options, along with excellent accommodations, fine cuisine and entertainment. When you’re ready for a break from all the gaming action, head to the nearby Creole Nature Trail, All-American Road for a tranquil Southern-wetland safari. Scenic driving and walking tours through the beaches and marshlands of Calcasieu and Cameron parishes will open visitors’ eyes to local wildlife, including gators, armadillo, mink, nutria and an array of unique swampland fauna. Fishing is also a must in this sportsman’s paradise, where such major tournament as ESPN’s Redfish Cup and the Redfish Nation Q Series take place each year. Hire yourself a local guide and try your hand at the sport on the still waters of the bayou.

MILLION AIR FLIGHT BRIEFING ORLANDO

A thrilling ride THE THEME-PARK MECCA OF ORLANDO IS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR DESTINATIONS IN THE US

WHERE TO SLEEP Do as Tiger Woods does when he is in Orlando and rest your head at the Villas of Grand Cypress, a sprawling and secluded blend of beautiful green space and luxury villas only minutes from downtown Orlando. Book the duplex, four-bedroom villa, furnished with oversize American Leather sofas and a waterside deck — perfect for entertaining. One North Jacaranda, (407) 239-4700, grandcypress.com WHERE TO EAT No matter where you are in the world, nothing says luxury like Ritz-Carlton, and that rule holds true in Orlando, thanks to The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes. Amid all the regality, it’s Norman’s — the hotel’s Italian palazzo–inspired dining option — that demands your attention. This is in part due to Norman Van Aken’s New World cuisine, served overlooking the Greg Norman–designed golf course. 4040 Central Florida Parkway Orlando, (407) 206-2400, grandelakes.com

Walt Disney World Resort

Situated among the rolling orange groves of central Florida, Orlando has, in just a few short decades, grown from a charming Southern town into one of the most- visited destinations in the United States. The warm hospitality and similarly pleasant climate surely have a lot to do with the rapid growth, but the primary catalyst has unquestionably been the amazing theme parks that call the city home. Walt Disney World Resort continues to lead the way, as it has every year since opening in 1971, with a seemingly infinite array of attractions and accommodations. It is a must-see for every visitor to the area, regardless of age or interest, as is Universal Studios Orlando, which has challenged the Disney-led hierarchy of late with legitimate nightlife options such as City Walk and their ever-growing fantasy kingdom, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. For an equally out-of-this-world experience, make sure to visit the Kennedy Space Center, the famed NASA launch site that has been used for every NASA space flight since 1968. And while much of the space

Kennedy Space Center

center is off-limits to civilians, the facility offers plenty for the non-space-bound as well, with an in-depth visitor complex that allows for the exploration of some of the USA’s most revered achievements in the field, such as the Space Shuttle Atlantis and the Hubble Telescope. In addition, the center offers a variety of interactive experiences, including the opportunity to have lunch with an astronaut. Of course, Orlando has a rich culture of its own, especially in the city’s famed Church Street District. Packed with great restaurants, shopping and classic Southern atmosphere, the Church Street District and its surrounding areas offer something for every interest and attitude, with nightlife that is vibrant and youthful. But there are also plenty of options for those seeking mellower relaxation, such as The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art — featuring the world’s largest collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany works — and a globally revered trove of great golf courses, including Shingle Creek Golf Club, which was named the best golf course in Florida in 2013.

MILLION AIR FLIGHT BRIEFING STENNIS

North of NewOrleans WHETHER HEADING SOUTH OR BLASTING INTO SPACE, STENNIS OFFERS OPTIONS FOR EVERY TRAVELER

WHERE TO SLEEP Between New Orleans’s thriving business district and history-rich French Quarter, The Roosevelt New Orleans is the city’s king of luxury. First opened in 1893, the property was damaged in Hurricane Katrina and fell from the public eye for the first time in its history. Thankfully a renovation, with a new Waldorf Astoria affiliation, has revived the legend and its stunning Astoria Suites. 130 Roosevelt Way, New Orleans, (504) 648-1200, therooseveltneworleans.com WHERE TO EAT Commander’s Palace — and the striking Victorian building it has called home for over 130 years — is more than a restaurant; it’s a piece of Southern history. While the riverboat captains and pre-war socialites may be gone, it has lost none of its classic elegance, offering intimate private dining options and an encyclopedic menu of Creole classics. This icon is at the top of every Gulf Coast gourmand’s fine dining checklist. 1403 Washington Avenue, New Orleans, (504) 899-8221, commanderspalace.com

Stennis Space Center The NASA site encourages visitors to come to its Infinity Science Center, next door

Commander’s Palace

For a first-time visitor, Stennis might appear quaint in comparison to many of Million Air’s bustling metropolitan locations. But dig a little deeper and a rich culture, boasting a plethora of activities and attractions, is uncovered. Stennis Space Center is undoubtedly the area’s claim to fame and number one attraction, playing host to not only thousands of visitors every year, but also some of the most important technological studies in the whole of NASA. Located on the banks of the Pearl River in Hancock County, Mississippi, Stennis Space Center hasn’t received the same Hollywood treatment that its bigger brothers in Houston and Orlando have,

but its rocket-testing facilities are unrivaled, leading some to coin the phrase “the road to space goes through Mississippi.” Visitors who are interested in the life on this planet can also enjoy the Stennis area, as it boasts innumerable wildlife preserves and national refuges throughout its diverse array of ecosystems. The 35,000-acre Pearl River Wildlife Management Area unfolds from its namesake’s east bank, offering hunting, fishing, and hiking opportunities, as well as swamp tours for kids. Farther downstream, the Delta National Wildlife Refuge plays host to one of the most unusual habitats on earth. If you’ve ever pined to step into the mouth of the mighty Mississippi, Delta National offers the perfect opportunity, with 49,000 acres of life-rich wetlands formed entirely from sediment deposited by this huge American river. Traveling urbanites needn’t worry about all this focus on the great outdoors, either. New Orleans, just minutes down the road, offers great accommodations and hospitality. Home to one of the most vibrant cultures in the country, the Crescent City offers plenty to do and see, including, most notably, a trip through the French Quarter for a glimpse of its famous sights, such as Bourbon Street and the St Louis Cathedral. After a ride around town in one of the antique streetcars, return to the modern world with a stop at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, which, in the years since Hurricane Katrina, has become a beacon of hope for the city.

WHERE TO FLY Located just over the Pearl River at Stennis International Airport, Million Air Stennis offers every amenity for the private jet traveler, including a hospitality bar, conference room and Mercedes crew cars. Captain and crew will be equally pleased thanks to a pilot lounge, de-icing services, and a dedicated flight-planning room.

Object of desire

To celebrate and encapsulate the life of someone as kaleidoscopically colorful and universally revered as Luciano Pavarotti was always going to be a labor of love. And the team at Decca Luxe has certainly poured its heart and soul into collector’s items will be created, one for each year of the legendary singer’s life. Each one is painstakingly handcrafted in the UK over 14 weeks by the artisans of Linley. To call the piece a music cabinet would be a disservice to the artistry and depth of thought that has gone into its creation. The Masterpiece is unique in its hybrid nature, which combines furniture design, music collection, cutting-edge technology and a working painter’s set. The highlight of the Life in Art Masterpiece is a music art cabinet in figured fumed eucalyptus, featuring external musical-notation detailing and internal marquetry inspired by one of Pavarotti’s paintings. An interactive multimedia interface provides access to the Maestro’s entire catalog with Decca Records, spanning 130 hours of audio Harmonious composition the Luciano Pavarotti Life in Art Masterpiece. Only 71 of these annotated scores. Dive deeper into this treasure trove and you’ll find 14 rare prints of his paintings discreetly housed in the lid. Nestled in a hidden compartment is a complete set of Winsor & Newton painter’s oils and brushes with a color palette reflecting Pavarotti’s paintings. A coffee-table book comprising a biography of Pavarotti and a behind-the-scenes look into the making of the cabinet completes the experience. These will be sold by invitation only and are the first in a series of collectibles honoring the life’s work of some of the greatest musicians in the world. We can’t wait to discover who is being celebrated next. From $95,000. Watches

Every H Moser watch is built and finished by hand, with all movements manufactured in-house

No name needed

For those in the know, it takes just a glance at an incredible sunburst fumé dial to recognize it as the work of H Moser & Cie. The independent Swiss brand — known not only for impeccable craftsmanship but also for being a bit of an enfant terrible for its antics, such as poking fun at the industry by making spoof watches — has mastered the art form. Fumé dials in its Concept pieces lack both logos and indexes, as adding them would detract from the dial’s beauty. This year, H Moser deemed something worthy of interrupting its dial: the Endeavour Tourbillon Concept showcases a 60-second flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock, housed in a steel case. Pairing steel with a tourbillon is classic H Moser: irreverent and provocative. This new in-house movement features a module tourbillon, which allows for easier servicing, as it is regulated independently from the rest of the movement and can be removed. It has a three-day power reserve and uses a double flat hairspring for improved accuracy. The firm also introduced a new color to the fumé dials in its Venturer collection. Blue Lagoon, a dreamy aqua, recalls the ocean in the tropics. Also in its Concept series, it has a clean dial with only the hour and minute hands. The white gold makes an especially striking contrast. Endeavour Tourbillon Concept, limited to 20 pieces, $63,000, Venturer Concept Blue Lagoon, limited to 20 pieces each in white and red gold, $24,400. BRAND PROFILE URWERK

It can take a fewminutes to wrap your head around an Urwerk movement, and for the firm’s cofounders, Felix Baumgartner andMartin Frei, that is the point. They deepen the relationship between wearer and watch, and create innovative movements and complications that require you to think, and, in some pieces, choose how you interact with the piece. The Swiss brand’s artisans test the boundaries of horology at workshops in Geneva and Zurich. Available at Cellini Jewelers in New York, +1 212 888 0505, urwerk.com

From top: Pink gold Tourbillon Chronograph; White gold Tourbillon Chronograph; Royal Oak Offshore Grande Complication

2. UR-210 Black Platinum The UR-210 uses Urwerk’s famous satellite hours, with an added retrograde-minutes complication. Three rotating cubes indicate the hour, with the current hour visible through the skeletonized minute arrow. This moves along the minute scale before it jumps back to zero, quicker than the human eye can see. There’s also a very unique indicator that shows the movement’s winding efficiency in the last two hours, allowing you to adjust the winding rate on the back of the watch, so it is more or less responsive to your motion. $163,000, limited to 25 pieces 3. UR-106 Black Pink Lotus Unlike brands that swap mechanical movements for quartz in women’s watches, Urwerk shows its respect for female collectors with its first dedicated ladies’ watch. Building on its wandering hours, Urwerk created a new carousel display system (based on the shape of a lotus flower) and added a moonphase, which emerges from the bottom of the movement as it sweeps around the dial. The black, PVD-coated steel case is discreetly set with black diamonds for an elegant touch. $184,000, limited to 11 pieces 1. UR-105 CT Streamliner Last year, Urwerk celebrated its 20th anniversary, and the designers returned to an original source of inspiration: Manhattan. The Art Deco style of two of New York’s most iconic skyscrapers, the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, heavily influenced the case design, notably the long, octagonal shape and deep channels. On the wrist, just the hour and a minutes scale are visible. When you open the top of the case, you’ll see the fascinating movement, which uses four satellite discs to tell the hours. As the hour passes, the discs rotate past the minute scale. $68,000, limited to 50 pieces

OFFSHORE’S BIGMOMENT

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak Offshore model, and the watchmaker is celebrating in a big way. In addition to reissuing the original from 1993 (with a modern, in-house movement), there are two major new watches in the iconic case. First, there’s a grande complication with a minute repeater, perpetual calendar and split-seconds chronograph in a sleek ceramic case. The four subdials stand out on the skeletonized self-winding movement, allowing you to watch the minute repeater in action. In the new Offshore tourbillon chronograph, Audemars Piguet opened up the movement to give it a futuristic 3D feel. Sandblasted titanium bridges with chamfered satin-brushed edges appear to drop directly from the bezel, allowing you to dive into the movement and admire the finishings. The tourbillon peeks out from one of these bridges at 9 o’clock, and the 30-minute chronograph counter is at 3 o’clock. Royal Oak Offshore Grande Complication, $760,000, Tourbillon Chronograph, $326,000, available at Audemars Piguet in New York, +1 888 214 6858, audemarspiguet.com

SEEING STRIPES

Designers had fun with stripes this season, as seen on everything from sportswear to tailoring and even accessories. Cerruti 1881’s Jason Basmajian went into the archives and reinterpreted classic looks from Nino Cerruti himself, most notably this Breton-striped crew-neck sweater and linen parka. A nonchalant ease characterizes Guillaume Meilland’s collection for Salvatore Ferragamo. Meilland credits René Clément’s 1960 movie Plein Soleil , which was filmed in Taormina, a picturesque hillside town on the island of Sicily, and based on the Patricia Highsmith novel The Talented Mr Ripley . The casual elegance of this striped blazer and crew-neck knit would fit right in on the shores of the Italian Mediterranean. Donatella Versace also dipped into the archives to pay respects to her late brother, Gianni, with a pinstriped suit reminiscent of the menswear that helped make the Versace name an Italian fashion powerhouse. Stripes were also seen on a variety of accessories. This leather-trimmed canvas tote with vintage Gucci logo by Alessandro Michele and these playful striped sunglasses from Dior Homme are two of our favorite examples.

Aloha prints Hawaiian shirts and large tropical prints were ubiquitous on the spring runways. But how do you wear them without looking like you’re headed to the surf shack? We’ll highlight two ways to wear these eye-catching prints to make sure you’re not mistaken for Magnum PI –era Tom Selleck. Kim Jones at Louis Vuitton paired his Hawaiian shirt with a classic trench and navy pants to ground the look. Sometimes you’ll want to go bold with a floral print and wear it with color, as Paul Smith did with these magenta trousers. The shirt is far from a traditional floral print; it features sea life, including coral and fish. The bright accessories and green shoes are ready to go in any tropical locale.

CHEANEY CHELSEA

Joseph Cheaney & Sons is another heritage shoemaker. This Godfrey Chelsea boot in plough suede is fully leather-lined with full leather insoles. It features Goodyear welted-diamond-rubber soles, and is handcrafted in the same Northamptonshire, England, factory the company has used since the late 1800s. $436,cheaney.co.uk

PRETTY PLAID

Plaid takes a feminine twist this season, appearing in ladylike silhouettes and colors. At Oscar de la Renta, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia showed an oversized- plaid navy-and-white top whose dramatic grid contrasted beautifully with its nipped waist and trailing asymmetrical hem. Christian Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri, meanwhile, impressed us with a take-no-prisoners plaid power suit amped up with an off-the-shoulder collar. Known for his strong yet feminine clothing and political stances supporting women’s empowerment, Prabal Gurung offered one of the season’s best plaids: a pink ruched dress worn atop matching wide-leg pants, perfectly encapsulating the trend. Also using soft pink, Nina Ricci’s Guillaume Henry paired a pink-and-gray blazer with a full gray skirt and a delicate lace top.
