… The air is still and cool, the sky is entirely grey… … M comes in to bring the new crown for Sri Ganesh: he has done it well and it fits perfectly and when we have laid it on Sri Ganesh’s head we find that it is at such an angle that it reflects exactly the light above the inner door and its shine is thus clearly visible even from a distance outside the shrine… I give him the full payment: he has melted all but 60 of the coins, that is Rs. 1,450/- worth of coins were melted for the crown and the balance Rs. 300/- + for the firing and all the labor before and after it another Rs. 2,700/- which I pay now = a total amount of Rs. 4,450/- for this beautiful crown… M tells me that it is actually illegal to melt minted coins; I had no idea, no one said so when earlier we had melted so many more for the tall brass lamps…!
