DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Tom Iannacone is in his eighth year as the University of San Diego Director of Athletics. He assumed the position Sep- tember I, 1988 after a nationwide search. The 54-year-old Iannacone has made great strides in his first seven years. His accomplishments at USD include an inter- nal reorganization of the athletic depart- ment, plus improvements in the major ar-

eas of personnel, scholarship assistance, facilities, promo- tions and marketing, fund raising, drug education, academic support, and a new university approved plan for scholarship support and sports sponsorship. In addition, he was instru- mental in USO gaining membership to the Pioneer Football League, which began play in 1993. Iannacone came to the University of San Diego with an impressive list of credentials and a thorough knowledge of intercollegiate athletics. Prior to USD he was Director of Athletics for four years at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania. Hard work, loyalty and dedication are just some of the words that easily describe Iannacone. His major contribu- tions at St. Francis included the expansion of sports offer- ings and scholarships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilities, the hiring of addi- tional staff, and the establishment of a master plan for the future and continual development of athletics. He served on several committees, most notably the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Infractions committee and the Northeast Conference committee on conference develop- ment. Iannacone also served as a consultant to the NCAA I-AAA Football Committee. Now that USD football is competing at the I-AA level, he is a member of the I-AA Athletic Directors Association Executive Committee. He is also the new chairman of the West Coast Conference Athletic Directors Committee. Prior to his tenure at St. Francis, Iannacone served as assistant athletic director at Fordham University from I977- 84. Along with his administrative duties at Fordham, he was an assistant football coach for the Rams. From 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victories in their final 24 games during this span. The 1977 squad remains the highest scoring team in Fordham history, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983 Iannacone was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey Award by the Alumni Association for outstanding contributions to Fordham athletics. He served on various Metro Atlantic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham, Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and football in the Norwalk, Ridgefield and New Milford (CT) school districts from 1964-76. He made his collegiate football coaching debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children: Tom, Jennifer and Eric. All three are recent graduates of USO. -3-

WEST COAST CONFERENCE The WCC has continued to prove itself as one of the strongest collegiate baseball conferences in the country. Four years ago, Pepperdine won its first national baseball title. The Waves were the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Regionals in 1995, 1993 and 1991 while Loyola Marymount represented the WCC in 1990. Both teams appeared at the NCAAs in 1989. Santa Clara advanced to the NCAA Regionals in 1994. Other conference members include the University of San Di- ego, the University of San Francisco, St. Mary's Col- lege and newly added this season, the Uni versity of Portland and Gonzaga University. This season WCC teams will play a 28-game round robin schedule with the league champion qualifying for an NCAA play-in game versus the WAC. Pepperdine has won the WCC crown in eight of the last 11 years and has won or shared every conference title but three since the 1974 season. Baseball was originally established as a confer- ence sport in 1968. However, from 1977 through 1984, WCC teams competed with teams from the PCAA (now the Big West) in the Northern California Baseball Association (Nevada, St. Mary ' s, San Fran- cisco, Santa Clara, Pacific, San Jose State, Fresno State), and the Southern California Baseball Associa- tion (Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, and San Diego from the WCC). 1995 wee Standings

1996 PREVIEW

New Faces & Young Talent Highlight '96 Head coach John Cunningham begins his thirty-third season with many question marks on his roster. With the graduation of eight starters from the '95 squad, Cunningham will enter a new territory with the biggest turnover on the roster in years. A lot of young and inexperienced players will be fighting for starting jobs early in the season. The key will be to see how well the team can play up to their own abilities. Senior Leadership The Toreros will look to senior first baseman Kevin Schramm and senior designated hitter Brock Marsh to carry the load offensively this season and lead by

Seniors Brock Marsh and Kevin Schramm will carry the load offensively for the Toreros this season.

example. The two are the top two returning home run hitters from '95 and combined for a total of 48 RBI's between them. Schramm has awesome power and if he has a good year could take USD a long way. Marsh is excellent from the left side and is a veteran player. Leadership coming from the rotation rests in the arm of Chad Halliburton, another senior who won five games last year and struck out 66 batters. Halliburton is com- ing off a shoulder sprain that occurred at the end of last season and followed with surgery.

-8-

1996 PREVIEW

One More Arm To Throw In Cunningham will have to move to a four-man rota- tion this season because of th e change in the co nfer ence schedule. Two sop h omo r es , Brian Mazone and Bart Miadich should see some time in the rota- tion with Miadich possibly working in as the team's closer. Junior Brian Springer, who recorded three saves last year, might be moved into the rotation.

Bart Miadich and Brian Mazone are two sophomore arms in the rotation.

Blending the Old and the New USD will try to blend their upperclassmen with the young talent new to the squad thi s season. Junior Matt Kuseski led the team in batting average in '95 and is the key returning base stealer. John McNamara is a second generation Torero who is the definition of a team player. Freshmen Chris Humpert and Eli Cecil have plenty of ability, but no game experience. Transfers Travis Farrell and Chris Liosi played well in the fall. Tough Schedule The Toreros will be tested from the start with ten games in the first two weeks. The WCC's move to eight teams and four-game series' will test USD's depth and strength of its rotation. The two new teams entering the confer- ence this season will make the WCC much stronger.
