FEATURE WALLS

FEATURE WALLS

What is a feature wall? A feature wall, is a wall in a room that you’ve decided to highlight in a bold colour, texture or other materials, to show off its features, adding interest, style and energy to your room. They are also used to highlight or compliment certain accessories in a room. Often one feature wall is enough in a single room otherwise it could be “over the top” and lack the attention one is trying to highlight. Is a feature wall for me? If you are worried that wallpapering an entire room is too heavy on the eye, or you are not to sure about a single colour for a whole room, then a feature wall is what you need.

Which wall is best? As a basic rule, choose a wall that’s as plain as possible, without doors or windows. Alternatively a chimney breast or alcove make great features and makes the element stand out.

How can Plascon help? Besides using our Inspired Colour TM Stand to help you use colour to create a stand out feature wall we also have a range of paints that give you some unique and stylish finishes.

Why it’s the best

HOW TO USE

Creates a rich and exotic look, adding depth and lustre to interior walls and trims.

Clean with water or Polycell brush cleaner

• An elegant metallic finish • Ideal for broadwalls, picture frames, mouldings and trims

Spread Rate: 7m 2 per litre

• Water-based • Quick-drying

METALLIC APPLICATION: 1. Apply two coats for desired effect to be evident.

4. When brushing, strokes should be in a single direction - vertical, diagonal and horizontal strokes each appear as different shades. 5. Start at the base of the wall rolling in an upwards direction . Work systematically and continuously move along and up the wall. 6. The application technique will affect the appearance of the paint. The recommendation is to practice on a small section of the wall before painting. 7. Avoid touch up areas on broad-wall application. 8. Pearl and Metallic paints can only be applied to smooth surfaces.

2. Pearl and Metallic paint have metal filings that sit at the bottom of the container when not in use. Stir well with a flat paddle for 5 minutes before use. During painting, stir every 30 minutes to ensure these metal particles are mixed into the paint. 3. Overlapping can be an issue with these paints because of the metal filings and the glossy nature of these paints. It is suggested working off a wet edge when doing these applications.

TIP: Add one part acrylic scumble Glaze (GSL 1) to the metallic paint. As mentioned before, overlapping on metallic paints can be more obvious, especially if you’re painting an entire wall with metallic paint. The paint retarder acrylic scumble glaze will lengthen the drying time of your metallic paint, giving you a chance to smooth the lap lines before the paint dries.

HOW TO USE

A rich faux-suede finish.

Clean with water or Polycell brush cleaner

• It absorbs and reflects light, enhancing the rich textured and suede finish • A fashionable colour range ideal for feature walls • Water-based • Quick-drying, two coats can be applied in one day

Spread Rate: 10m 2 per litre

SUEDE APPLICATION: 1. Prepare your wall by applying Plascon Polvin tinted in a similar colour to your Suede product as your base coat. 2. Stir well with a flat paddle for 5 minutes before use. During painting, stir every 30 minutes to ensure these metal particles are mixed into the paint. 3. Once your base coat is dry you can start applying the Suede product.

4. Apply the first coat with a long nap roller , brushing all areas that cannot be reached by roller first. 5. To ensure a good film of paint avoid overspreading . 6. To achieve faux suede effect apply second coat with a good quality Professional brush (100mm), in random criss-cross strokes . 7. Hand pressure is important , if you press to hard you will end up removing all the suede effect.

TIP: Suede is slightly translucent and in order to create this three dimensional effect it requires two layers of Suede. Allow the first layer to dry thoroughly (4 hours drying time)

WOOD

WOOD

Plascon Woodcare is a range of varnishes and sealers which are used for protecting and beautifying all wood. Our products are technologically formulated to withstand the harsh South African climate and environmental conditions, making it the natural choice for our customers. Types of Wood: (Depending on the type of wood and number of coats applied, the colours may differ.) What are Softwoods? The term “softwood” actually refers to a group of di erent species of trees from which the wood is harvested. A general rule of thumb is that softwoods come from coniferous or “evergreen” trees e.g. Pine, Cedar and Redwood. Conifers are fast-growing, can be easily cultivated and produce relatively straight trunks, which makes harvesting and processing much less expensive. Softwood/Conifers are also used in the manufacturing of fibreboard and paper. What are Hardwoods? These are woods that come from deciduous (Broad leafed) trees and have a close grain. Types of hardwoods used for furniture construction are Walnut, Oak, Mahogany, Teak, Kiaat, Balau, Maple and Cherry. Most hardwoods are very durable and heavy. Pieces of furniture made from these woods last for many years under normal use. While Oak and Maple hardwoods are considered somewhat informal; Mahogany, Teak, Cherry and Walnut are used in more traditional or formal interiors. When coating very hard woods such as Teak, special attention on preparation needs to be done to ensure adhesion of the coating. Contact Plascon Advisory Service on 0860 20 40 60

What is varnish? Varnish is applied to the surface of the wood to provide a protective layer against damage. Varnishes do not penetrate into the wood; they block the surface of the wood to o er protection against moisture. Recoating may only be necessary after several years internally or three years externally, however, the preparation before recoating might include having to strip o all the old varnish right down to raw wood. This depends if the previous coat of varnish has started to crack or peel and if the underlying wood surface has been damaged. What is a sealer? Sealer is combination of resins and oils, but with a lower thickness than varnish, which means that sealer actually penetrates into the wood itself to nourish and protect from within, rather than on top. Wood that has been coated with a sealer will typically need to be recoated every 1 to 2 years depending on conditions. However, the preparation and process is quick and simple. These products produce a more natural finish. Should I use a sealer, oil or a varnish? Varnishes and Sealers are available for both interior and exterior applications. The decision on whether to use a varnish or sealer depends on the type of finish and lifespan that you require from the coating.
