San mego Poised For 2003-04 Season

/

/

The 2003-04 season promises to be the best season in the history of University of San Diego's women's basketball. The Torero team is prepared to play their best basketball beginning with the opening game in the Women ' s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) through the title game of the wee tournament. The Toreros will be challenged to replace the 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists per game to make up for the loss of Kerri Nakamoto and Erin Malich. Marta Menuez and Melissa Padgett, the two seniors , are ready and willing to step up to the plate. Both players have made major im– provements in each of their three years; and their

Marta Menuez

final season will be no different. Marta is a powerful presence inside and will dominate the key as she has added several inside moves to her scoring arsenal and has improved her defensive rebounding to complement her ag– gressive offensive rebounding. Marta is poised to be a double-digit rebounder in every game. Melissa Padgett, a coach's daughter, under– stands the game better than anyone on the floor and will raise the Toreros play in every facet of the game. Melissa will contribute to every Torero win - whether she is needed to defend the best post on the opposing team, hit the three-point shot off the drive and dish, or get a great assist on a pass to Marta in the hi-low attack. The four returning sophomores will use their game experiences to take the team to the next level. Polly Dong has improved her ball han– dling and leadership skills. Tiara Harris has gained confidence in her ball handling skills and has continued to progress in her offen– sive game. Jamie Corwin is stronger and more confident in her ability to score includ-

ing the three-point shot, driving lay-ups, and pull– up jumpers . Lindsay Helvey will be able to use her all-around skills as the team's utility player now that she has recovered from a variety of injuries and illnesses. Brandi Collato is back from a medi– cal red-shirt year, having used the year to get her knee healthy and to improve every aspect of her game. Brandi knows how to score when she gets the ball and will be expected to be the Torero's long-range threat. The four incoming freshmen, AndreaJacobson, Sabine Loewe , Ashley Voisinet, and Katie Watson, will bring added height , speed, and athleticism. These freshmen will make an impact as they add depth and competitiveness to each practice and game .

I KATHYMARPE Head Coach

24th year

Entering her 31 st year as a head coach and her 24 th season at the helm of the University of San Diego women's basketball program, Kathy Marpe's name is synonymous with the success of the USD Toreros.

Marpe's coaching career began in Minnesota at Spring Lake Park High School in 1971 where she not only coached basketball, but also the volleyball and

softball teams. In the combined three sports, the teams totaled an impressive 53-1 record.

Two years later, Marpe was coaching in "The Pit" at the University of New Mexico where the Lobos accumulated a 51-30 record in her final three seasons. She led the Lobos to consecutive finishes in the Associated Press Top 20 and made six AIAW Regional appearances in seven years. In addition, attendance records were attained with the women drawing over 1,000 per game with crowds reach– ing 2,000-3,000 - attendance figures that were unheard of in the 70's. In 1980, Marpe brought her coaching expertise to USD. Over the years, she has witnessed many changes in the game of women's basketball including the skills and athleticism of today's student athletes. Coach Marpe's ability to embrace and capitalize on the changes in the athletic environment

has resulted in many milestones that aspiring coaches admire including 3.65. career coaching victories, 111 West Coast Conference wins, 2 WCC coach of the year awards, 2 conference tournament championships and 2 NCAA Tour– nament teams. In addition under Marpe's tute– lage , 5 Toreros, Susie Erpelding, Jessica Gray, Erin Malich, Chris Enger, and Deb Weinreis have become professional basketball players . Coach Marpe values the academic success and community involvement of her players. Her encouragement and support of her players are apparent as the Torero teams have included 12 First Team All-West Coast Conference players, and 30 players have been honored as WCC Scholar Athletes . Coach Marpe states, "It is very important to remember who you are and where you come from, and also to give back to the people around you who are not so fortunate. "

Marpe has successfully guided the USD Toreros to 2 NCAA Tournament bids. In 1993, the USD team earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament by bounc– ing back from a 4-10 wee record in 1992 to finish 8-6 and second in the conference standings . The second trip in 2000 came after the Toreros beat the number one seeded Pepperdine Waves, 68-51.

On February 3, 2001, Marpe became the fourth coach in WCC history to reach 100 conference victories. She now owns 111 WCC wins, which ranks her third all– time in WCC career coaching victories . Marpe's fil overall career wins places her in an elite class of about 60 NCAA coaches who have won over 300 career games. As "dean" ofWCC coaches, Marpe was honored as Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1998. The 1998 honor came as a result of leading the Toreros to one of the largest single-season turnarounds in WCC history - an improve– ment of eight games.

Continuing to embrace change in the 2003-04 season, Marpe hopes to duplicate the Torero success of the past.
