COMMISSION. VII
STANDARDISATION
r . CONSTITUTION AND TERMS OF REFERENCE.
Among the objects of the IIW which appear in its constitution is that of << assisting in the formulation of international standards for "·elding in colla– boration 'vith the I nternational tandards Organisation n. It was therefore decided on the foundation of the IIvV to set up a Commission to deal specially with standardisation matters. This Commission met for the first time at Delft in 1949. Its principal purpose, as stated in its terms of refer– ence, which were clearly laid clown at that meeting, is to organise close liaison, as mentioned in chapter III, beb,·een the I SO and, in particular, its Committee ISO/TC 44 (Welding), and the IHV. This liaison is operative both in connexion with problems raised by I SO and, at the same time, with work carried out by the technical Commissions of the II\V 'vhich is likely to result in recommendations for international standards. In this work, the Commission's function is essentially one of coordination, details of which will be given in the section below dealing with the work accom– plished. Apart from maintaining this liaison in a way which has been shown to be most effective over the years, Commission VII can, of course, on its own account, s uggest to the various technical Commissions of the II\\ work which would appear to be useful as a technical basis for standardisation. It should, however, be borne in mind that Commission \'II does not itself deal with the preparation of stand ards , even of a limited kind, since this is the province of I SO and, as regards welding in particular, of its Committee 4-+ (Welding) .
