CH16 TRIBUTE TRUCK
Modifications & Accessories: - AVS Smoked Ventvisors - AVS Smoked Bugflector - Putco Blade LED Tailgate Light Bar - Tonneau Cover - Painted Rims - Exhaust Chrome Tip
Don Fraser’s 2014 Ford FX4 5.0 is a truck with a purpose: “The truck was put together to honour the 5 soldiers I served with in Afghanistan in 2008. It’s my way of keeping their memories alive.” It is named CH16 “as it’s the 16 th auto in our volunteer foundation, Canadian Heroes.” Don chose this pickup because: “the truck had all the bells and whistles I was looking for.” He had the wrap in- stalled first “as it’s a long process”. His favourite
accessories are “my painted rims and the light bar.” CH16 began to feel like Don’s dream ride after he had the “window visors, tailgate light bar and window tint” added. He has plans to get “a tail exhaust tip and under glow” next. He also has a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac “which is very similar to my new truck, keeping memories alive.” Regarding other vehicles that he admires, Don writes: “I’m a big fan of the Land Rover Discovery, old style, for its looks and its off-road capabilities”.
Based out of Edmonton, Don and CH16 “tour Western Canada, going to community events, air shows and schools promoting awareness of our fallen and injured past, present and future.” Don is often accompanied by his wife Cindy and his son Brice who help him by detailing photos and who support his efforts in this great cause. Don is a volunteer for The Canadian Heroes Foundation, which is a not for profit organization with the
mission to create awareness and support for our Front-Line Responders, our Fallen Heroes and their families. It is also a tribute to those who have served in the past, present and future.
The Company Overview on The Canadian Heroes Foundation’s Face book page states: “The Cana- dian Heroes Foundation is built on Volunteers, the only pay we receive is pride in what we are do- ing and seeing a smile on the faces of the family members of the fallen or an embracing hug and the ultimate pay, those two words THANK YOU. It is our Honour to volunteer here.”

WHAT TRUCK CANOPY IS RIGHT FOR ME?
Article by: Tyller Rice
Truck canopies are one of the most common accessories you can consider for your truck. But how do you choose the right one for you? The first question you need to ask is what is the primary use of the canopy? Will it be for work or play? Work canopies are typically referred to as DCC – Deluxe Commercial Truck Cover. They are made of aluminum versus fiberglass and are available with a myriad of options such as: built-in drawers, shelves, sliding floor beds, lockers, ladder racks, double doors, power outlets, and custom lighting. The manufacturers’ websites will offer some options, but you are better served by visiting an authorized dealer for a more detailed conversation about your requirements because there are so many customized choices and layouts. A DCC can take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to arrive from the manufacturer and it will take about 1.5-2 hours to install, depending on the options you have ordered. These canopies are custom-made for your truck’s year, make and model so that each one is a perfect fit. Your work canopy can also be colour-matched for that added touch. Most DCCs come with a lifetime warranty on the structure. They can weigh between 200-400 lbs., so each work cap is not as easy to remove as a consumer-grade topper. Should you wish to purchase a canopy for personal use, such as for fishing and camping, or perhaps just to keep your truck bed safe and clean while hauling groceries, supplies, and pets around, there are nearly as many options available to you. Generally made from fiberglass, consumer canopies are lighter than their commercial counterparts. They are generally delivered in 2-3 weeks and come
with a few more creature comforts to support the active user. For instance, options such as the Thule roof rack system provide compatibil- ity to all of Thule’s carrier systems to support your active lifestyle with everything from your bike to your canoe. Choose from sliding screen or fixed side windows, interior lighting and power outlets. Canopies can come at a flush-mounted to the cab height or several inches taller to accommodate more space for cargo as well as for your ease of use. Not only are canopies versatile and well thought-out on the inside, they are also durable and streamlined on the outside to enhance the look of the trucks they complete. From a $500 full colour paint match, which is included in the fiberglass canopy price (except for tri-colour paints) to adding roof racks and different sized windows, canopies have come a long way in the last 10 years. Leer is one of the top brands on the market. They have been in business since the late 1960s, so they have earned their excellent repu- tation through experience. Under their corporate name of Truck Accessories Group (TAG), Leer sells multiple brands, including Century Canopy. From materials to workmanship, value to warranty, and through their authorized dealers network, Leer is a very well-respected and reputable brand to consider when making a decision to fit your needs.
Whichever canopy and options you end up choosing, make sure you look at some common-sense installation add-ons such as a tailgate seal to keep dust and mois- ture out of your truck bed and a carpet- lined interior to better manage moisture and humidity when enjoying camping. Finally, don’t forget to schedule the annual inspection offered by your dealer to ensure you maintain your canopy in good order and that it remains safely and securely mounted on your truck bed. Enjoy your selection process as there are lots of great looking canopies that will work with your truck. Just be clear about your needs and expectations at the outset.

16 THE ACCESSORY DREAM GUIDE
FEATURED VEHICLE
It’s no surprise that Ross Forman’s favourite accessory is his Tepui Tent. This North Vancouverite likes to get away to Canada’s wilderness for weekend camping. Like so many North Shore Off-Road customers, Ross also enjoys going further off-road on overland trips: “We did a trip through Oregon and Idaho. We have a trip planned this fall through Utah. Next spring, we hope to go north towards Alaska.” His fondest memory with this truck is: “camping on Alvord Desert, Oregon.” He calls that the: “closest thing to camping on the moon.” Ross’ current vehicle is a 2017 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro in cement grey and he has two reasons for this: “reliability and resale”. His first accessory was Nitto tires and he hopes to add a Magnuson Supercharger. He considers his Toyota to be his dream ride because: “I can use the truck for a daytime driver, overland camper truck, dirt bike hauler, then back to work Monday with it again. We built a Smittybilt pulley system in the garage to lift the tent on and off the truck and store it in the ceiling.

It makes it easier to prep for overland trips.” He was so impressed with the pulley system that he posted a photo of it on his Instagram page, @formanpilkington. You can also find many photos of his co-pilot, a silver Labrador retriever, Dany, there too. Every person who knows and loves vehicles can completely relate to Ross’ other reason for knowing he found his dream ride in his Tundra: “When I would rather drive the truck than my Jaguar XFR.” That in itself could be an ad for Toyota.
When Ross was asked which vehicle he admired, he an- swered: “I’m a Raptor fan. It is a more off-road version of the TRD Pro. It has a slightly larger ride with nice finishes.” “My last truck was a 2007 Ram Mega Cab with a 9” lift on 38’s, custom paint and interior, bumpers, winch and much more. It was just too big for city driving.” Anyone who has driven in Vancouver recently knows what Ross means by city driving. Ross contin- ues his vehicle list: “I sold my 2005 Chrysler 300C with a rebuilt supercharged motor with over 750HP. I traded it for a Jaguar
XFR which has less HP, but it’s a nicer finish and still has a supercharged V8.” He adds: “The reason I have not done a lift on the truck is that I need to be able to park it underground for my work. I only have an inch to spare as it is. Part of me really wants to do the Pro Comp Long Arm Kit, but that would change the height too much. I can walk my dirt bike up the ramp and into the box, which is a nice benefit. Being the TRD Pro, the suspension is soft on the windy highways, but when you get off road it sucks up the bumps very well.”

SUSPENSION UPGRADES & LIFTS LOOK VERSUS FUNCTION
Article By: Tyler Case
Regardless of whether you are a truck or Jeep person, it’s hard to ignore a raised vehicle running big rubbers on the streets of cities anywhere. All sorts of questions go through your mind. Why did they do that? How much did it cost? How is the ride quality? What can they do with it? Is it just looks or is there a function? Does raising your vehicle impact warranty on the truck/Jeep? It looks crazy and fun! A few years back, raising your truck or Jeep used to be something only an enthusiast would consider for an exclusive off-road experience. Today, even casual drivers are looking for a little added flare by either adding larger tires and wheels or lifting their rides with a lift or suspension kit. To think you can actually raise your vehicle for as little as $500 is pretty remarkable. Keep in mind that a body lift is different from a suspension kit, which can typically add 2-8 inches of clearance.
A body lift is achieved by utilizing blocks and spacers to lift the body higher on
the frame, which allows for larger tires, but without any increased ground clearance. A leveling kit addresses the “rake” built into the suspension of most trucks, meaning the rear sits higher than the front so it can haul heavy loads in the bed. A leveling kit is primarily used for looks. A suspension lift kit however, increases your ground clearance and can run you several thousand dollars depending on the brand of product, the type of suspension, and the height of the lift. You will also need to look for other mechanical repairs and upgrades on used trucks to ensure safe installations and you will certainly be requiring an alignment afterwards. There are a number of key aftermarket manufacturers in the lift/suspension field including Pro Comp, Zone, and BDS. Each offers a slightly different approach in their manufacturing and installation kits, as well as different warranty programs. BDS for example, offers a “no fine-print” warranty which essentially allows for any broken parts to be replaced for the life of your vehicle. This is something off-road enthusiasts really value on their weekend-punishing off-road adventures. As for ride quality and gas mileage, there is a difference, as you’d expect. Larger tires with bigger treads will be the main contributor to ride quality, but handling is also affected by tire size and a higher centre of gravity. While all suspension lifts from the major manufacturers are designed with safety in mind, it’s never a substitute for common sense and safe driving habits. The most important part of any lift or suspension upgrade is the installation. Make sure you source professionals with experience and a good reputation. You don’t want to risk investing several thousands of dollars and not have the install done right. These days, with a little thought, research, and local expertise, you too can upgrade the look and feel of your ride with a lift, leveling kit, or full suspension kit at a pretty reasonable cost, making your truck or Jeep completely yours.

Red Deer’s Trisha Garbett is full of Canadian pride for her ride and she has a great way of expressing it: “If you don’t look back at your vehicle to admire it while walking away, it isn’t the right one!” This 2015 Jeep Wrangler X-Edition is Trisha’s third Jeep: “I’ve always had a love of Jeeps and their versatility!” She calls it Jessica and it’s the first ride she’s named. “The first thing we installed were Magnum side steps. I’m short, 5’4”, and struggled every time I got in or out.” Trisha’s favourite accessory so far is the Smittybilt stinger-style bumper and swing gate combo for the spare tire: “It gives the Jeep a beefier stance from the front and saves the tailgate from sagging from the weight of the 35’s!” Trisha and her husband have begun to join in some of the truck-centred social functions: “It started with meeting the Red Deer-based group of True North Rams, but I was glad that the groups Red Deer Rides (RDR) and Truck Enthusiasts were created so that we could be recognized for our
rides and vehicle preferences in those groups. It’s a great way to meet new people and at- tend events throughout the community.” “We have attended a handful of Red Deer Cruise Night events but have not entered any shows yet.” “I think I felt the Jeep was my dream ride when it got as much attention as my husband’s done-up truck. We like to call the pair ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and rightfully so! Our other ‘toy’ is a 2014 Dodge 3500 Dually. It has a 2.5” leveling kit and a S&B cold air intake. It’s deleted with EFI Live, Flo-Pro straight piped, and sits on 20” Monster Mayhem wheels wrapped in 35x12.5 Firestone Destination MTs. It really is a beast!” “It was that, or when I received my first Jeep wave. It’s a Jeep thing, you wouldn’t understand!”

GETTING OUT OF STICKY SITUATIONS
Recovery Must-Haves
Article by: Tyller Rice
So, you’ve bought a new Jeep or truck that is “off-road” ready. You can finally join in on one of those “off-road group rides” you’ve always dreamed about. Unfortunately, you have no idea what you need to take with you to not only look the part, but to survive. Off-road recovery is simple, but not easy. Although you can find out about all that you’ll need at a local, experienced Jeep or truck accessory shop, there are so many choices that making the right decisions on what to get can be overwhelming. Tow points, d-rings, winches, jacks, straps and lines, compressors, tools, and tire patch kits are just a few of the practical choices. So, what should you get first and what can wait? Which brands are the best for which products? How do you learn what to use and how? Do you really need to spend a lot just to get started?
The good news is you don’t need to feel shy or embarrassed about your questions. Like anything else new, it will take a bit of time to learn the ropes--if you pardon the pun. There is ample information online and of course, at your local off-road shops, where most of the staff are big off-road enthusiasts.
Begin your process by answering a few key questions. What type of off-roading you will be do- ing? Are you thinking of rock climbing, mud or scenic trails? Are you heading out alone where you will only have yourself to count on, or exploring with a group? Do you want to get your hands dirty and use manual force with a jack to get unstuck or would you rather use the power of a winch to get back on track? Each answer will lead to more questions until you start to check off the list of items that are a must for your first adventure.
There are lots of manufacturers marketing different lines of products and solutions for the off-road enthusiast. There are companies like Warn Industries, which has been making winches since 1948.
Other well-known brands are Smittybilt, Zenon and Bulldog. Each will have it’s own following and take on build, capacity, gears, speed, function, and warranty. Once you have chosen a brand, type and size of winch, you will also need to select the right type cables or ropes for your specific needs. From synthetic ropes to recovery straps and bungee-style tow straps, there are different tools for each challenge. This is an area you need to pay extra attention to because broken lines can lead to serious injuries. Most off-road and 4-wheel clubs and associations offer tips and training for new off-roaders. They are typically a tight-knit community who love and respect the outdoors. Fortunately, you can be an enthusiast without needing to be very mechanically-inclined. This is comfort- ing to know as you too will soon learn the ins and outs of not only what to take with you when you explore, but how to avoid getting into sticky spots to begin with. Have you ever wondered why winches are usually on the front of Trucks and Jeeps? Well, if you are going uphill on a rocky or steep trail, you’ll want to continue heading in that direction if and when you get stuck. If you get stuck in some deep mud on a flat section however, being pulled out the way you went in may make more sense. In this case, the winch on the front is of far less benefit than if it were on the back. So again, the type of off-roading you do matters most in how you equip your ride.
Finally, you may want to consider an air compressor. This so you can “air-down” your tires for your rock-laid or snow-filled trails. Letting out some air helps your tires get better traction and improves the ride quality over bumps. Once you are done with your day, you can simply use the air compressor to re-inflate your tires for the highway ride home. Don’t be shy, just jump right in. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you’ll learn while maximizing your fun and safety in nature with your off-road hauler. There’s never been a better time to head out there for adventure.

Kerry Rioux has a philosophy about vehicles: “I am a firm believer in keeping what you have and not always going for the latest and the greatest. Some so-called improve- ments are not always for the better. The next thing is to regularly modify your vehicles just a little to keep up your interest. Your interest is crucial because once you get dis- interested, you’ll trade it off and spend way more than if you had just bought a set of headlights to change the look. Another trick is to always change your windshield if there’s a crack. If you are looking through a clean wind- shield, your car always feels new. Do this and maintain it by being hyper diligent if ANY thing breaks, even a switch or piece of trim, you should fix it right away. These good habits will save you tons of money in the long run and turn your daily driver into a vehicle you can love a long time and that is as one of a kind as you are!”
With these suggestions, it makes perfect sense that Kerry’s current ride is a 2007 GMC Sierra 2500 HD SLT Crew Cab Diesel. It was his first brand new truck and he writes that he’s “always been a GMC fan.” The name he chose for his truck shows how much he values it. The truck goes by “Zeus – the God of Thunder”. He also had to choose a name “because my much younger, at the time, children demanded one”.

Although he thought hard on it, Kerry could not choose a favourite accessory that he’s had installed on Zeus: “That’s a toughie–the reverse camera, the rear step bar, the grill with the 20” light bar, the side step bars, the centre console vault, the huge third brake light, the satin dark grey wrap, the BDS lift kit, the rear bumper flood lights, the swing case in the truck bed, the Retrax hard bed cover and the wheels and 35” tires combo are all kind of tied for first place in my favourites list”. Next, he plans to add: “KC HiLites super low-profile M-Rack with 50” curved light bar and 4 side floods. Those will complete the ultimate ‘Bug Out’ vehicle theme.”
Kerry’s other most memorable vehicle also has a great name, Boomerang: “I have a 1988 Camaro IROC-X convertible that I spent over $100k on and sent to South Carolina
for 6 months to have completely modified end to end. It is LS3 Supercharged with 700HP. It is now without a doubt one of, if not the, fastest rag top in existence. Back when I was a dealer, I sold that car 4 times with the instruction to the new owners to bring it back to me if they ever wanted to sell it. They did this in 1992, 1996, 1999 and 2003. I then sold the dealership and saw it in the old car trader in 2007. Then I bought it for the fifth and final time. That’s why the plate says Boomerang–because it kept coming back.” Kerry is a driver who gets the most out of his vehicles and that includes his GMC: “It has always been a daily driver. At 280,000 km, I had a decision to make, buy a brand new one or spend the money to make my truck exactly what I always wanted it to be. The deprecia- tion on a new one in its first year would pretty much cover the cost of the redo and since the truck still runs perfectly, I chose the rebuild route. It was one of the most fun things I have ever done. The truck has been a chase vehicle for the Enbridge cancer bike run with 2200 bicyclers, it’s rescued neighbours from ditches, and been in the Arizona desert, the great Smokey mountains and the Pacific Northwest. It’s been everywhere, pulled everything and has served our family wonderfully.”

Year/Make/Model: 2012 Ford F550 Owner: Wembley Fire Department Location: Wembley, AB
RESCUE UNIT
Wembley is a small town of approximately 2000 people just 24 km west of Grande Prairie, Alberta. In addition to their 25 brave and dedicated volunteer firefighters, they have recently employed a full-time Fire Chief. They work closely with the fire departments from the surrounding commu- nities in all types of first response situations ranging from car accidents to fires to ice rescues. After some successful fund raising and with a lot of community support, they recently bought this Ford F550 rescue truck which the County was retiring. This makes the firefighters’ jobs much easier as the F550 can get into places which the larger fire trucks can’t. Now they have equipped it to fit their needs by having practical accessories installed including an 8000 lb. Warn winch complete with synthetic rope and a Warn Epic Recovery kit. A spray- in box liner protects the back-work area,

which in summer months will house a water skid and in winter will carry all of the ice rescue equipment. After all, this is northern Canada and ice rescue is a common emergency. To protect it from harsh elements, they got a custom-fit Truxedo ProX15 mounted over the truck box. Under that, there is a very handy full roll-out Cargo Bed. The team at Raven Truck Accessories Grande Prairie stated: “It was an honour to work on such a great piece of equipment”. It didn’t take long for this new piece of equipment to see action. In fact, the day they got it back, it went out on a call less than 2 hours later.
