TAC TRAVELS Back in March, fellow Club Members Jim Tietjen and Kim Fuchs joined an ocean expedition to Antarctica along with 100 of their new best friends. This once-in- a-lifetime trip began in the town of Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego (Argentine Patagonia), then brought them to the South Polar Circle, 66 degrees, 34 minutes south longitude. Along the way they saw majestic mountains, scientific research stations, huts built in the 1800s, huge waves, as well as numerous icebergs of all sizes, whales, dolphins, seals, penguins, and seabirds. 10 expert guides briefed the group on the history of Antarctic exploration, exploitation, and scientific research; the diverse fauna, flora, and undersea life; and the effects of climate change. During this 12-day odyssey, the guides took groups via 10-passenger rigid inflatable boats to nine different locations where they trekked, viewed wildlife up close, and visited former and current research facilities. Though the sea was a bit rough at times, and the trip costly, it was an outstanding experience! After the expedition, Jim spent two weeks trekking in Patagonia – a week in Argentina (El Calafate and El Chalten) and a week in Torres Del Paine National Park in Chile. He then rendezvoused with Kim back in Santiago where they enjoyed the food, wine, pisco sours, and the sights! Are you an avid traveler who has wondrous stories to share? We welcome all Members to submit their travel stories and pictures to us via info@amclub.org.sg – we’ll publish your stories in our Club magazine.
