Dear Members,

shortly and will feature the return of the beloved salad bar at lunchtime. The Gym (see more on page 13) and The Gourmet Pantry are scheduled to open summer, and I know we are all looking forward to using these new spaces. The Tennis Gallery will be under construction for most of the summer and is scheduled to open together with the back-of-house areas. Once these areas are complete, the staff offices on B1 will move to their permanent locations, and the space will return to its former usage as parking for Members. With the opening of the B1 parking area, the construction phase of the redevelopment project will be complete! While we still have the rectification period of redevelopment ahead and we know that everything is not perfect, we have achieved a lot and have much to look forward to as a community. The Club has benefited from new programs like The Entrepreneurs Series, A Literary Evening book launches, Fintech Forum, and Monthly Storytelling sessions for kids. The General Committee is committed to listening to our fellow Members, and new subcommittees have both been formed and are in the process of forming to meet Member requests and interests. One such example is the HEAL (Healthy Eating and Allergies) Subcommittee, which will focus on special dietary needs and healthy eating alternatives – read more about HEAL on page 23. All of these activities, programs, and subcommittees were made possible through the creative input of Members who contributed not only their ideas but also their time and effort. In this busy season, please know that you are appreciated and valued as a Member, and that, wherever your travels may take you this summer – whether it’s the US, Canada, or staying in Singapore – home is waiting for you here at The Club.

This is a busy time of year in the cycle of Club life. For many of our Members, the end of the school year is quickly approaching, activities are wrapping up, summer travel plans are being finalized, flurries of party invitations appear in mailboxes, backpacks, and inboxes, and thoughts often return to “home”. Reflecting on my own thoughts of home, it occurred to me today that The Club has been the setting for most of the milestones in my family’s life. We celebrated my oldest daughter’s first birthday in Eagle’s Nest and her graduation from college at the same location, and we have spent countless hours at The Club attending parties, brunch, swim lessons, ballet classes, bowling, on the tennis courts, at That Dance Thing, and in the Gym. My first thought after this realization was that The Club truly has been my family’s home away from home for the past 28 years, and then I realized that The Club is more than that to my family. It is simply home. I know that I share this feeling and experience with many other Members, and I see it every day in the interest, passion, and time that my fellow Members give to The Club. Our Club is able to operate due to the collaborative efforts of Member volunteers and a professional management team. I am so grateful to our wonderful staff team and to the many Members that stepped forward to volunteer their time and expertise on both new and existing committees throughout the redevelopment process. The formation of two new Member Resolution Working Groups reflects our culture of embracing different perspectives and displays the strong spirit of volunteerism within our community. The Audit Review Group and the Constitutional Review Group have been working diligently to implement the two respective Member resolutions that were passed at the Annual General Meeting in 2018, and the Pool Area Working Group has also made significant progress on the longer-term exploration of a pool area redesign. You may have noticed the Club team and our Member volunteers working at a frenzied pace to bring Club spaces and outlets online. I hope you are enjoying the new Claymore Entrance and that you are looking forward to the Lobby opening in the near future. Tradewinds, our new all-day dining outlet, will follow

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Members,

Summer is quickly approaching, and even though the weather is always warm here in Singapore, the long break is enough to conjure happy memories of splashing about in the pool, grilling in the backyard and hanging out with friends having fun. When I think back to the time when my family joined The Club 17 years ago, we were living in a condo with all the typical conveniences of condo life – pool, gym and a ready-made community (although not a predominantly American one). While we have since moved to a landed property with more space for our daughter and our dog, I’m glad that having a Club membership means I don’t have to forgo the comforts I’ve grown accustomed. What we got out of our membership was more than we expected. Beyond our daughter learning to swim here, and my wife finding her tribe through the Pilates classes, I also developed a swim routine here, found fellow beer lovers in the Union Bar, and became a part of the larger American framework. This includes serving on the board of the Singapore American School and the American Chamber of Commerce. Throughout these years, the pool has been the heartbeat of The Club. From pool parties, swim lessons, quick dips after happy hour and meals, Club life certainly revolves around the pool. Under the guidance of Greg Fasala, our Aquatics Head Coach and former Olympiad winner, our swim program has quickly grown in interest and quality. The program serves our youngest swimmers to the oldest, in addition to water safety programs for the helpers. I believe I speak for all Members in our appreciation of the lifeguards who are constantly patrolling the pools and ensuring our children and Members are safe at all times, whether during lessons or play time.

Thursday mornings. It’s a great workout and I feel refreshed the rest of the day. I’ve also enjoyed the recent swim meets; it’s heartening to see our young swimmers graduate from being tentative in the water to competitive swimmers who do The Club proud. Besides swimming, I also love heading to the pool area on Friday evenings to grab a TAC70 beer. Many Members gather in the evenings for some wine or tacos, and I love seeing so many familiar faces. In fact, most afternoons I can find Members post tennis lessons, after dropping their kids off at taekwondo, or before a Committee Meeting, enjoying an iced tea, a salad or some of our scrumptious brisket. With the opening of Tradewinds, it won’t be long before we have a nice flow – step into the Lobby, have a bite at Tradewinds or Central while overlooking the excitement at the pool, walk past the pool deck and straight to the Scotts Road building, which houses sên Spa, The Quad and our temporary Gym. The Claymore entrance already looks drastically different, and I’m sure The Club will continue to evolve in the remaining months of redevelopment. The summer months will also see extensive work on the Gym and The Gourmet Pantry. While we can’t wait for redevelopment to be completed, The Club is still abuzz with tons of activities. Never fear if you’re in Singapore over the summer holiday – we have lots going on at the pool and beyond. Check out our TAC Summer Guide on page 12 - we will make sure those dog days of summer fly by!

Extension of Niche Group Re-qualification The General Committee has recently approved the extension of the current Elite/15K/10K benefits for existing Niche Group members until June 30, 2020. This means that all Elite/15K/10K Members that newly qualified as at December 31, 2018 or automatically re-qualified from prior years, will continue to enjoy the privileges of the program till June 30, 2020. This is our way of saying a big thank you for your amazing support during this unique redevelopment period. Existing Niche Group members’ spending from January 2019 to June 2020 (18 months) will be recognized for (re)qualification for the new niche group cycle. To (re) qualify for the Niche Group program after June 30, 2020, simply accumulate spending, excluding monthly dues, between July to June each year. they can achieve quantum improvements in safety and health standards at the workplace. The Club has been certified bizSAFE level 3 since 2013, and we are pleased to share that we have once again passed the mandatory renewal audit by a Ministry of Manpower approved auditor and maintained our bizSAFE level 3 certification. The American Alchemist Hosted by EC Proof, the geniuses behind 28 Hong Kong Street, Atlas andManhattan Bar, our inaugural tasting and cocktail series The American Alchemist was met with overwhelming response. The first event held in October saw Members at a fun gin tasting and G&T class; the second event in November was centered on rum tasting, while the third session in January featured whisky tasting. The penultimate event in February had Members taste agave cocktails, and the series culminated in our final event on March 14. The SMASH! cocktail making session and contest was oversubscribed, and we opened up more slots so more Members could taste the delicious whisky and rum SMASH cocktails. Our very own Club bartenders Dens, Simon and Monzie had a friendly showdown to create their very own unique cocktails, with Simon emerging as champion!

International Women’s Day A balanced world is a better world. The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #BalanceforBetter, and over 100 women from the American and Canadian communities in Singapore came together for an evening of female empowerment. Jointly hosted by The American Club, American Association of Singapore, American Women’s Association and Canadian Association of Singapore, and held at The Club’s Galbraith Ballroom, the evening kicked off with an exciting performance by the AWA choir featuring a repertoire of songs in multiple languages. The crowd was then transfixed by a beautiful dance honoring three Hindu goddesses performed by Soumee De Girotra, professional banker and co-founder of Odissi dancers. The two keynote speakers Stephanie Syptak-Ramnath (US Chargé d’Affaires) and Tan Su Shan (DBS Bank and NMP 2012-2014) shared their personal struggles at the workplace and in the family, and how they achieved balance with the multiple hats they juggle. Next, our 5 panel speakers Aliza Knox (Cloudflare), Christina Liew (Lean In Singapore Chapter), Lucienne Blessing (Singapore University of Technology and Design), Pamela Chng (Bettr Barista Academy) and Tin Pei Ling (Member of Parliament) discussed their experiences regarding gender in the workplace, and the ongoing challenges of achieving balance between their work and personal lives.

I very much admire Wonder Woman. As you know, Halloween is a highly celebrated event in America. I believe I dressed up as Wonder Woman three different years when I was a young girl. It’s been 3 months since we dropped our last storage box at my mom’s house in Houston and made the life changing move to Singapore. My Wonder Woman costume is probably in one of those boxes. As I stare out the window of our new SG home, just a 5 minute walk from The American Club, I think back on how I got to this point in my life. As a single Mother of 3, full time student and a nurse, our Wonder Woman was relentless in raising us right. Always pushing us to strive for more, to move through life with strength and integrity, and to honor all opportunities presented with an open mind. We had wonderful Christmas memories

growing up yet the one that stands out is her gift of “Time in a Bottle”. She took that poem, fired the edges of the paper and rolled it into a corked glass bottle. At the end of the poem was an invitation for a weekend away of my choice, with or without grandchildren. I’ll never forget that gift or our weekend getaway to the hill country. Quality time is our love language. My mom lost her husband, and I my Father in July last year. Three months later, I’m breaking the news to my mom, who is also my next door neighbor of 11 years, that we are moving to Singapore in January. I felt terrible leaving her. My mother responded to the news with tearful loving eyes, “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. You will be missed, yet this is your time.” Thank you mom, because of your strength, this next chapter in my life begins. I give to you a virtual “Time in a bottle” from 10,000 miles away. Anywhere in Asia you want to go? Your choice, with or without grandchildren. I can’t wait to see my Wonder Woman again!!!!!!! Mindy has had a huge impact on the community through her work with Scouts (BSA), and helped start Cub Scouts Pack 3010 and BSA Troop 1010, which is the first BSA troop for girls on the island. with her husband, helping raise two beautiful girls, being the school bake sale mom, class mom, keeping our house in operation, attending multiple bible studies throughout the week, chauffeuring to a number of TAC activities and being a daily trainer for our vizsla, Ödi. She's been an amazing companion, and while our time in Singapore is coming to an end, I wouldn't expect anyone but such a Wonder Woman to pack up and continue all she does in Scotland. Submitted by Bruce Witwer I would like to nominate Margo Encarnacion. She is a treasured colleague and friend who first introduced my family to The American Club almost a decade ago. Margo is a mother to 3 boys and beloved wife but she also manages to balance a demanding career as a lawyer at Credit Suisse while giving back to her community as a board member of Gawad Kalinga and UWCSEA. Margo commits her energy to giving back, sustainability and making the world a better place. I think we should celebrate Margo on International Women’s Day for the contributions she has made as a role model for women and society generally. Submitted by Margaret Song-Sil Kim Sonja left war torn Yugoslavia after winning a tennis scholarship to attend University in the U.S. She used to practice over 5 hours per day 7 days a week for many years before being awarded the scholarship. While in University, she played in division one and her team was ranked top 40 nationwide. Upon graduating University with a 4.0 grade point average, she was given the opportunity through another scholarship, to purse her MBA and coach her University's tennis team. She continued doing so until graduation where she also graduated with a perfect grade point average. She was then given a scholarship to pursue her PHD which she did and upon successful completion and graduation with honors yet again, she was hired as a research professor at ESSEC Business School, one of the two top business schools in France. Within the span of several years, she was promoted to the LVMH chaired professor at ESSEC and since that time she has had multiple publications in top tier journals in the field of marketing such as the Journal of Consumer Research, was selected top 40 under 40 professors by poets and quants, and has guided many students to pursue their professional dreams. I nominate Samantha Van Norman as a TAC Wonder Woman! She is a tireless, dedicated and loving mother of 3. She is never shy from volunteering to help out with the school projects and field trips. She gave birth at home to all three kids including two of them in Singapore! She is truly the engine of this family and her energy and enthusiasm are contagious to all that know her. Her favorite time of the day is snuggle time with her little ones in the morning before heading out to work out or train others to be more fit. We are blessed to have this lady in our lives everyday! General Information To create the new Gym, feedback was gathered from the Gym Subcommittee, Gym focus groups, Member volunteers and Management. Simon Thompson, Principal at Aedas Interiors, led the design team. His past clients include Fitness First and Pure Fitness gyms. Designed to have an industrial feel, the new Gym is a mix of brick, metal and wood. With integrated sports elements, the space will be reminiscent of an American baseball stadium.

Bigger Changing Rooms

By increasing the overall size of the Gym, more space was allotted to the locker rooms. Members will be pleased to know that the shower stalls and changing areas will be larger, and the number of female showers has been increased. Additionally, both men’s and women’s locker rooms will include a steam room. The female changing area will include two benches for seating, a communal area for hanging clothes, and two private changing areas. The space also includes a counter with five hairdryers and makeup spots.

A familiar sight at The Club for the past 16 years, Yusman tried his hand at multiple roles before finding his niche in food & beverage service. With the new all-day-dining restaurant set to open soon, Yusman has gamely taken on the role of Tradewinds’ Service Director – join us in congratulating him on his new role! HE’S THE ( Yus )MAN

What does the role of a Service Director (SD) entail ? As SD, I oversee operations – from making sure that we have enough staff on shift and that our service standards are top-notch to ensuring that my team is constantly being challenged and growing in their roles. It is important for us to groom and train staff – be it training a newcomer who recently joined The Club, or sending our existing staff for external courses. Learning never ends when you’re part of The Club! I also work closely with the Chefs to implement monthly dining promotions and specials. Efficiency is also key to ensuring Members are happy – that food is served piping hot and promptly, and Members don’t have to wait too long for service.

What can Members look forward to at Tradewinds? Tradewinds will devote equal attention to both buffet and a la carte offerings. There will be an open concept kitchen with a pizza station, omelette station, local delicacies station and a western station. We’ve also taken into consideration the changing food habits of our Members, and the Tradewinds menu will feature healthy, vegetarian and gluten-light options. Chef Chuan, formerly from Brewerkz, has recently joined our team of Chefs and will oversee the new menu. But fret not – old Eagle’s Nest favorites are here to stay, but with some fresh new creations!

16 years is a long time to spend at any organization – what are some of the roles you’ve taken on in the past? I joined The Club as a fresh-faced part-timer when I was a teenager, and became a full-time waiter when I was 16. After my compulsory 2-year National Service, I returned to The Club and was trained in supervisory roles. I held different positions at the Banquet Department, Coffee House (the Central of many years ago), Stewarding, Union Bar and most recently Eagle’s Nest. I was also part of the opening team when The Club launched The 2 nd Floor. Since the closure of Eagle’s Nest last February, I have been working very closely with our Senior F&B Operations Manager Afieq on the closure, launch and operations of our new dining outlets – Grillhouse, Central and the new Union Bar. What does The American Club mean to you? To be honest, I spend more hours at The Club than at home – it’s no wonder The Club is truly a home away from home, not just for Members but for staff as well. My colleagues, superiors and Members are all like family to me. I have grown together with so many Members – from busy adults to now semi-retired Members who frequent The Club even more, and adorable babies who are now Junior Members and Members in their own right. Members respect the staff and treat us well, and colleagues are always ready to lend a helping hand. The bond the staff has is something that you cannot experience anywhere else. We even have colleagues from different departments helping each other, especially during busy times like our annual Club birthday bash.

What’s your greatest takeaway from your Club journey thus far? Other than the friendships I’ve forged with Member- friends and colleagues, my greatest takeaway will be my scholarship to study in the Singapore Hotel and Tourism Education Centre (SHATEC) in 2006. The Club sponsored my 2 years of education at SHATEC where I went through intensive training in food & beverage management. I also had the chance to intern at Grand Hyatt, where I learned the responsibilities of being a butler. I also learned how to serve Chinese cuisine in one of the Chinese restaurants owned by SHATEC (which helped when The Club launched The 2 nd Floor!). I returned to The Club with renewed passion for my chosen line of work, and learned valuable technical and leadership skills.

H e al SUBCOMMITTEE

COMMITTEE FEATURE

With such a wholesome name, it’s no wonder our newly formed HEAL Subcommittee (HEAL) focuses on Members’ health and wellness. Short for Healthy Eating & Allergies, HEAL is the brainchild of GC Member and Social & Dining (S&D) Committee Chair Nasir Kausar. Why was HEAL formed? The S&D Committee touches on healthy food options at most meetings, but due to the sheer volume of new ideas, menu and event discussions that go on, it was tough to ensure enough attention is dedicated to this topic. Monica Pitrelli, who chairs HEAL, and Nasir are aware that healthy food is very important to many Members, and felt it was time to form a subcommittee solely dedicated to this cause. The subject can inevitably get a little dicey – how one Member defines “healthy food” can be completely different from another Member. Hence, after much discussion, HEAL has decided on its strategy for the coming months. HEAL does not just support one definition of “healthy”, and does not plan to overhaul the entire menu and system. Instead, HEAL aims to provide more options, rather than less options, to suit what Members currently want and need. So don’t worry – your favorite Club burger isn’t going anywhere! What are HEAL’s goals and objectives? HEAL aims to be a bridge between Members and management regarding Club food options related to health, special diets and allergies, and the go-to place where Members can send suggestions and follow up on those suggestions (even if the answer isn't what they hoped for). HEAL will vet ideas - from Members as well as the Subcommittee’s - and turn great ones into meaningful change. HEAL also wants to elevate health consciousness and allergy awareness among the staff. Each member of the subcommittee has a background in food or wellness – either professionally (we have a nutritionist and two doctors in our ranks) or personally (from keto enthusiasts to those with serious dietary allergies). The Subcommittee is a nice cross-section of The Club across ages, genders and interests. What can Members look forward to? HEAL’s first task is to survey The Club to find out how many Members adhere to a special diet due to lifestyle choices or medical reasons. Are you gluten-intolerant? Avoiding carbs to lose weight? Have a child with a serious egg allergy? If so, let us know. There is power in numbers, and once HEAL has an understanding of who is eating what, the Subcommittee can sharpen their focus. If Members are perfectly happy with the status quo, please also let HEAL know. Those opinions are valuable, too. After the survey, HEAL will begin looking into creating Club-wide food labels, ingredient lists, menu additions, staff education reducing and eliminating the use of plastic and much more.
