2015 has seen some of our most innovative vessels to date completed. We’ve been working hard on new and proven solutions throughout the entire process of shipbuilding in order to make our ships more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly. One big contribution is the Flex Tunnel by Van der Velden, which led to considerable fuel saving, less resistance, improved manoeuvrability and velocity and propulsion efficiency of about 10%, as well as increased cargo space and loading capacity.

Interview with Ivo Stevens Ivo Stevens from Gent is a third-generation inland navigation entrepreneur. Thanks to his family background, he has all the necessary qualities to successfully grow the Galaxie NV enterprise, which was founded in 1990. The mts Elisa S is the second ship the company turn-key ordered at RensenDriessen.

Stevens’ spouse Erika Kiss is not only his staunch partner in life, but also in business. Every once in a while, they critically assess their business goals to make sure they’re still on the right track. Two years ago, during one of those assessments, it became clear that there was enough room to invest in the future. Many years had passed since the words ‘new construction’ had been uttered, but there they were again, out loud. The last time new construction was discussed had been during the construction of their 110.00m mts Galapagos in 2002. As it happens, RensenDriessen was the one to turn-key deliver that ship to Galaxie NV as well.

After a conversation with the bank, what were first only thoughts of new construction developed into definitive building schemes for a new tanker, mainly because Stevens could tell his banker that RensenDriessen would trade- in his current ship at a fixed rate. And with that, the financial part of the story was complete. Stevens effortlessly envisioned several ships in the following months. Several images and details that stuck with him and that he put to paper resembled a type of ship that had been built several times already. His new ship was going to be a 135.00m tanker.

Just like when he started on the building schemes for the mts Galapagos, Stevens found his way to RensenDriessen’s office in Zwijndrecht. During his conversation with Wim Driessen, Stevens elaborated on his wishes for the ship he envisioned. Even though it’s easy to outfit such a large ship with many extra features, unnecessary luxury has no place in Stevens’ philosophy. He did have one singular priority, though, for himself, his crew, and his client Unibarge. Stevens wanted a ship that was safe for the environment, as well as safe on board. For that crucial aspect, as well as all the other matters considering the essential reliability of the ship, Ubbo Rommerts of Rommerts Ship Design was given free rein to develop his ideas. During only the second conversation, the first 3D images of a high-quality tanker with dimensions of 135.00x17.50x6.10m were projected. The well thought-out design was that of a midship, and should be thought of as a characteristic construction vital to this kind of large ship. One of the ship’s eye-catching features is Rommert’s Tank Star software, installed in order to ensure the most safe and economical way of working on board. Tank Star is a program that fully conforms to the rules of classification societies. It’s been approved to make on-board longitudinal strength and stability calculations. “We’ve worked on it for two years,” Driessen says. “The mts Elisa S is the first ship we installed it on.” “When I look back on it, construction has been incredibly quick,” Stevens says. The hull construction in Romania took only five and a half months, after which the hull was delivered to The Netherlands during the winter. The completion process was a quick one as well, taking only three and a half months. Stevens: “Our trust in RensenDriessen was strengthened thanks to this quick delivery.”

The first glowing reviews came in during Stevens’ first trial sail of the ship. “She simply glides through the water,” he said. Two tough ABC-diesel engines boasting 1500 horse power in combination with the bow thrusters and rudders readily tackle any ruthless challenge the classification societies tend to set. The calculations Stevens received before RensenDriessen and Rommerts began construction completely match his practical experience with the ship in the last six months, no exceptions. “We haven’t been let down once,” is what we’re hearing. On top of that, Stevens is happily surprised with the ship’s sailing traits and manoeuvrability. “It sails just as well as a 110m ship, which pleases me immensely,” he says. “When you board a 135m ship when you’re only used to a 110m ship, a whole new world opens up to you.” Business-wise, how does Stevens look back on the second half of 2015? He’s hoping to build on all the good things that came to be during this period. Thankfully, we’ve also had some good fortune during this period. The international trade even broke out of its downward spiral, breathing new life into the market, something we didn’t dare dream would happen. Every little bit helps and part of that is the low-water period working in our favor. Stevens is happy with the mts Elisa and confesses he’s never had this much affinity for a ship. “All our wishes came true,” the successful entrepreneur beams. Just as the previous generations of the Stevens family, Ivo Stevens remains the picture of humility. As always, both his feet are planted firmly on the ground.

Interview met Ivo Stevens Ivo Stevens uit Gent behoort tot de derde generatie binnenvaartondernemers binnen de familie Stevens. Vanuit die achtergrond heeft hij de juiste eigenschappen meegekregen waarmee hij de in 1990 opgerichte onderneming Galaxie NV op succesvolle wijze verder heeft uitgebouwd. Het mts Elisa S is het tweede schip dat turnkey bij RensenDriessen werd besteld.

Samen met Ivo’s echtgenote Erika Kiss vormt het koppel eveneens een hecht zakelijk duo. Van tijd tot tijd kijken ze met een scherp oog naar hun zakelijke doelstellingen om te zien of ze op de juiste koers liggen. Twee jaar terug bleek er voldoende ruimte te zijn voor een toekomstgerichte investering waarbij zelfs het woord nieuwbouw na veel jaren weer eens over tafel ging. De laatste keer dat dit geschiedde was bij de bouw van hun 110.00 meter mts Galapagos in 2002. Ook dat schip werd door RensenDriessen turnkey geleverd aan Galaxie NV.

De gedachte aan nieuwbouw werd na een gesprek met de bank omgezet in definitieve bouwplannen voor een nieuw tankschip. Het feit dat Stevens de bankier kon vertellen dat zijn vorige schip door RensenDriessen tegen een vaste prijs zou worden afgenomen maakte het financieringsplaatje compleet. Met zijn ogen dicht bouwde Stevens in de maanden er na een aantal schepen. Beelden en details die bleven hangen en door hem op papier werden gezet bleken uiteindelijk steeds uit te komen bij een scheepstype waarvan er al meerdere varen. Het zou een 135.00 meter tanker moeten worden.

Evenals bij aanvang van de bouwplannen van het mts Galapagos vond Stevens ook nu weer de weg naar het kantoor van RensenDriessen in Zwijndrecht. Tijdens het gesprek met Wim Driessen profileert Stevens zijn wensen voor het schip dat hij voor ogen heeft. Hoewel je op zo’n groot schip probleemloos veel extra opties kwijt kunt, komt onnodige luxe niet voor in het woordenboek van Stevens. Wel staat voor zijn bemanning, opdrachtgever Unibarge en voor zichzelf één aspect hoog genoteerd en vet gedrukt: de veiligheid van het schip voor de omgeving en het werken aan boord. Voor dat cruciale aspect en alle overige zaken rond de essentiële betrouwbaarheid van het schip kregen de ideeën van Ubbo Rommerts van Rommerts Ship Design alle ruimte. Al bij het tweede gesprek werden de eerste 3D-beelden geprojecteerd van een hoogwaardig tankschip met een maatvoering van 135.00x17.50x6.10 meter. Het ontwerp toont een slim doordacht middenschip dat gerekend moet worden tot de kenmerkende constructie die nu eenmaal onmisbaar is bij dit soort grote schepen. Voor de meest veilige en economische manier van werken aan boord zal Rommert’s Tank Star software worden geïnstalleerd. Tank Star is een programma dat binnen de regels van de classificatie bureaus volledig is goedgekeurd om aan boord langsscheepse stabiliteitsberekeningen te maken. ‘We hebben er twee jaar aan gewerkt’ zegt Driessen, ‘het mts Elisa S is het eerste schip waarop we het installeerden’. ‘Als ik terugkijk is de bouw enorm snel verlopen’ zegt Stevens. De cascobouw in Roemenië was met vijf en een halve maand bekeken. Het casco werd in wintertijd buitenom in Nederland afgeleverd. De afbouw is eveneens snel verlopen en was binnen drie en een halve maand beklonken. ‘De vertrouwensband met RensenDriessen is door deze snelle oplevering opnieuw verstevigd’ zegt Stevens.

Al tijdens de proefvaart horen we van Stevens zijn eerste positieve commentaren. ‘Het schip glijdt door het water’ zegt hij. Twee stoere ABC-dieselmotoren van 1500pk trotseren daarna in combinatie met de (boeg)schroeven en de roeren probleemloos de meedogenloze proeven die de klasse er op loslaat.De berekeningen die Stevens voor aanvang van de bouw van RensenDriessen en Rommerts op zak had gekregen blijken zonder uitzondering te stroken met de inmiddels opgedane praktijk ervaring van ruim een half jaar. ‘Er zijn absoluut geen zaken aan het licht gekomen die waren tegengevallen’ horen we. En aan die opmerking wordt meteen vastgeknoopt dat hij ook nog eens blij werd verrast met de vaareigenschappen en manoeuvreerbaarheid van het schip. ‘Het vaart net zo goed als een 110 meter schip’en daar is hij blij mee zegt Stevens. Hij vervolgt: ‘als je van een 110 meter schip voor het eerst op deze van 135 meter overstapt dan kom je uiteindelijk toch in een andere wereld’. En hoe kijkt Stevens zakelijk terug op de tweede helft van 2015? Hij hoopt op een voortzetting van al het goede dat zich in die periode heeft gemanifesteerd. Gelukkig is het iedereen weer een beetje meer voor de wind gegaan. Je had het niet durven dromen. De internationale handel kwam zelfs terug uit de neerwaartse spiraal waardoor er weer leven in de markt zit. Alle kleine beetjes helpen en daar hoorden zelfs de periode van lage waterstanden bij. Stevens is blij met het mts Elisa S en bekent dat hij nog nooit zoveel affiniteit heeft gehad met een schip. ‘Alle wensen zijn uitgekomen’ zegt deze succesvolle ondernemer vol trots. In navolging van de voorgaande generaties vinden we ook bij Ivo Stevens onverminderde bescheidenheid. De beide voeten blijven altijd stevig op de grond.

Our successful series of the MoneyMaker tanker type was extended and improved yet again by delivering RP Rheinfelden. The MoneyMaker is well-known for her high speed - low fuel consumption, optimized draught, and her great range, thanks to its very low draft. 2.180 tons at a depth of 2.80m (!). It has a fuel consumption of 140 litres per hour at a cruising speed of 9.5 km/h upstream (past Duisburg). Another MoneyMaker set out to live up to its name!

Bunker Tanker Pascale is based on our Beryl design and is a relatively big tanker with small dimensions. With its length of 85x10.5m it can still carry 2.500 tons of cargo! This design is ideal for the bunkering of gasoil and heavy fuels.

An entirely new design bunker vessel to operate on the German river Rhine in bunkering other inland ships. This vessel will carry gasoil, lubricating oil, and fresh water.

Project Rhenus Bilge Boat is specifically designed for collecting waste water and bilges from inland vessels sailing the Rhine and Danube rivers. This Bilge Boat will be equipped with a sophisticated cleaning installation to clean and purify waste waters.

This is our latest design: the Dry Cargo/container vessel Dianthus. The design is based on the typical dimensions for inland ships: 110x11.45m. The depth is limited to 3.55m, instead of the more common 3.65m. This reduces steel weight, and together with her new bodylines in fore- and aft ship, this gives the vessel much better draught, meaning she can carry more cargo in shallow waters. On top of that, we’ve redesigned the vessel to improve draft, which enables the vessel to easy access the German channels.
