No limits,Jonathan? he thought. Well, then the time's not distant when I'm going to appear out of thin air on your beach, and show you a thing or two about flying! And though he tried to look properly severe for his students, Fletcher Seagull suddenly saw them all as theyreally were, just for a moment, and he more than liked, he loved what he saw. No limits, Jonathan? he thought, and he smiled. Hisrace to learn had begun. Jonathan Livingston Seagull Richard Bach

ADMINISTRATION

BISHOP LEO T. MAHER Bishop Maher serves USD as its Chairman of the Board of Trustees. His association with theuniversity goes back to the mergerof the College for Women and the College for Men, a move in which he was the driving force. His generosity is marked by the donationof the St. Francis Seminary to USD. He has institutedmany social services in the local Catholic commu nity, andhas achieved the formation of many new parishes throughout Southern California. Bishop Maher is often visible oncampus takingan afternoon stroll.

19

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The thirty-five men and women who constitute the Board of Trustees represent virtually every walk of life; they are scientists, business women, religious, home- makers, academicians, physicians. It is in their hands that the ulti mate stewardship of the Universi ty rests. Under the law, they are the "owners" of the University, and it is the Board as a whole which formulates the major poli cies and thrust of the institution. They are led by an elected chair man, Bishop LeoT. Maher,D.D.

HOMECOMING

As the culmination of a long, exhausting, enjoyable Spirit Week, the 7th ofNovember dawned a lovely Indian summerday. It was perfect forthe celebration of a Homecoming with our "Friends", the 1981 theme. From start to finish, theday proved a success. The footballers trounceda weak Chapman football club, 42-27, with Coach Williams insuring that all Torero players saw some action. At halftime, with the team enjoying a comfortable leadand the crowd festive, the A.S. rolledout a gala display. Bedecked in fine tuxedoes, the officers broke with tradition and elected to accompa ny the court's candidates themselves. The paradealso enjoyed a new twist. Along with the usual finely tuned cars and women, the Alumni Association inspired the return of the Homecoming floats - a fun and original show this year. The attendants, elected by their peers, graced theparade, andproved aworthy court. They were: Junior Gloria Blanco, Sophomore Monica McHugh, and Freshman SherryBrown. The Seniorcandidates for queen were: Mary Durnin, SallyNorth, andMargarita Palau. The ball, once again hosted by Harbor Island's Sheraton, was plush, romantic, expensive, and too short: all that a Homecoming Ball should be. Between dinner anddance, the announcement of the 1981Homecoming Queen was made, with Margarita Palau taking home the honor. The dancing itself was anything but anticlimatic with the music provided by the talented Touche. For all those who were impervious to the glitter, glamour, and roman tic ambiance of that special evening . . . there wasalways cham pagne . . .

Aside from the traditional festivities, all Homecomings should contain a certain amount of fanfare produced by the participants themselves, the fans. The Rugby team, having en tered their candidate for queen too late, decidedto float their favorite air-head above th stands for all to admire. In addition, someone forgot to remind the alumni about the dry-campus policy, andtheir blatant displays of the veneratedcontraband saw the undergrads tongues wagging, in eager anticipation of their own post-graduate days. It i this modality of thought that makes our great CatholicUniversity what it is today.

SORRY GANG

WfmM® \

"I'm glad he's having agood time!"

Vice-President Joe Laub, junior, concentrated his efforts on the direction of Program Board. Under Joe's guidance, the Program Board was able to reach out to all interests at U.S.D. and to provide the stu dents with many quality events. Joe was a major force in coordinating "Theme Weekends", just one of a variety of ideas introduced this year. As a member of the Budget Committee, an advisor to I.C.C., and a member of the ARGSB (student research grant committee), Joe succeeded in bringing an atmosphere of seriousness and business to the office of Vice-President. Joe does admit, in his hu morous way, that with so much going on, it was difficult to squeeze in academics. VICE PRESIDENT

PRESIDENT A.S. Pre ident Vince Guilin expanded the re presentational scope of this year's A. .B. Vince's main priority has been to make the A. . knowl edgeable of the university sy tern thereby increa ing awarene s of problem areas for th tudents. Being in a financially ound position thi year, the A. . as an organization effectively d viated from the usual "Social" role, involving it elf in the areas of services and academics. Thi provided the student body with better representation and en abled them to have control over areas that should be under student control. Academically Vince is a five-year enior with potential degrees in European Studies, lnterna tional Relations, panish, and who know what else! Presiding over thi year's Exectuive Board, enate, and Finance ommittee has b n helpful in enhancing Vince' administrative talents, a well a finance and per onal management skills.

SECRETARY OF FINANCE

David Goddard senior, joined the Executive Board forspring semester as A.S. controller, a newly created position this year. David de scribes hisposition in the A.S.as the onewho advises the Secretary of Finance about how much to spend of the A.S.B. monies. Laughing ly, he sees his position as a "glorified book keeper." As an Accounting-Economics double major and dedicated student, David is highly qualified for the position and the long hours that come with the job. David is a five-year senior and will finish his Economics degree next year. After that? Well it's off to law school. However, David's current goal is to leave the A.S. in good financial condition.

Secretary ofFinance, betterknown as "the manwith the money", Danhas the difficultjob of budgeting andoversee ing all A.S.B. financial transactions as well as fending off heated demands and accusations from A.S.B. officers and affiliates interestedin maintaining their budgets. Dan'sjob includes handling everything from contracts to petty cash. He also serves as a financial advisor to all A.S.B. related organizations: Program Board, Senate, and I.C.C. Dan's a great guy but his opinion is vulnerable to budget cuts.

CONTROLLER

This year the job fluctuated as greatly as ASB grades. During the Fall, Laura Stanley held the position, leaving in Spring to work as a congressional campaigner. Bill Thomas took over her position and brought his ownperson able style into play. As Secretary of Academics each acted as a instrumental liason between faculty and students, as well as administration. Faculty Forum is a open series of discussions and presentations coordinated every semester by the Secretaryof Academics.

SECRETARY OF STUDENT SERVICES

Not pictured: Laura Stanley Secretary of Academics: BillThomas

Secretary of Student Services: Jessica Waston

Well roll all your ASB odd jobs, complaints and ser vices together and you have Jessica's job description. In matters dealingwith everything from Food Service to Campus MinistryJessica wheels and deals day in and out. A thankless job of sorts she brings a sense of humor and maintained patience to it. Jessica has worked ex tensively this year evaluating housing contracts and academic proposals, such desperate complaints as the Add-drop refund deadlines to cafeteria meal cards. Thanks for all the hard work.

SECRETARY OF ACADEMICS

Carolyn inher sparetime is in charge of in forming the USD Community of upcoming events. Probablythe most widely seen effects of her work includes the Social Calendar (that Big thing hangingon your wall that tells you when movies, T.G.s and the like are) along with table tents and showcases. Carolyn known for her style and efficiency, stands out in the otherwise casual"prep" lifestyle of ASB.

SECRETARY OF JUSTICE

Secretary ofJustice: KatieTrotter Well we like this kid a whole helluva lot. In addition to being in charge of Student Court (this means traffic appeal), Election Committee, and Safety Committee for students, she also givesgreat parties . . . without breaking any rules!!! Now "that's incredible". We also wonder if it's reallypossible?

Secretary ofCommunications: Carolyn Emme

SOCIAL CHAIRMAN

SECRETARY OF ATHLETICS

Secretary of Athletics: Mark Tunney Mark isa Business Administration major and also a Resi dent Assistant in the student valley housing (not an enviable job). Mark serves asliason between the Sports Center, USD athletic teams, and the A.S.B. He helps promote non-colle giate and inter-campus tournaments, covering the gamut from TG tug-a-warsto Torero Week and Homecoming Half- time. Apretty nice guy to bring home to mom, he is one of the few A.S.B. men capable of growing an attractive and legitimate mustache.

Steve Welch brought a number of new ideas to the job of Social Chairman, and he's the manmost directly responsible for those Friday afternoons of madness that we all know and love . .. T.G.'s.He also manages to supervise traditional events such as Homecoming, ASB BALL, and Disneyland Night. Whennot busy on the job, he can be found indulging in all activi ties appropriate to the job of Social Chair man (not to be chronicled here in this euphumistic journal of nostalgia). We'll just tell you that we'vehad to change his name twice to protect the innocent and the uninformed.

CULTURAL ARTS BOARD DIRECTOR

That elusive iguana-like figure periodically seen slithering through the shadows of A.S.B. offices and the Student Union, is none otherthan this fall'sLark Director and our favorite reptile, Dan Dinan. Thisgreat guy was responsible for pre senting John Lee Hooker to theUSD fans,as well as staging the "Evening of Southern California Bands". He also helped in the production of the John Klemmer/Carl Anderson con cert andworked with the SocialChairman and clubs in the hiring ofbands forevents. Basically, this poisonous looking person is merely agreat guyhidden behind darkglasses and the faintaroma ofgin. GONZO."

Cultural Arts Board Director: Joel Sweimler

This year was a year of events for Cultural Arts Board. Beginning with Vincent Price and followed by the premier opening of The Old Globe with 'As You Like It', also Neil Simons 'Chapter Two', and concluding with 'For Col ored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide, When The Rainbow Is Enuf, in coordination with the Black Student Union. A successful and entertaining year.

SPECIAL EVENTS DIRECTOR

The office of Public Relations was created to establish a improve A.S.B. relations with other universities, their stu dents and administrations for the purpose of cooperative programming. A list of valuable contacts was compiled and is hoped that these contacts will help benefit publicized at other universities for the first time. Bob w rked closely with Sara Finn, the Directorof Public Relations,to improve the publicity of A.S.B. events. Bob O'Connell also worked with San Diego State Cultural Arts Director, UCSD's Concert Bureau, andUSIU's StudentAffairs Department.

te

Yes, It istrue thereis a mastermind behind all USD LARK events.Unfortunately this pe- son has many alias's including Dan Dinan, and Todd Huckins. He is currently using "Andy Patman". If found still functioning after events like John Kleemer, John Lee Hooker, Nu Wave Night, Laff Nite, Carl Anderson and Laserium, do not bother him. He is apt to suffer from program board flashbacks, budget cut convul sions, and student affairs breakdowns, He manages to find respite in havens such as O'Connells (on a good day), and W.C.P.C. (when he really needs consolation). Caution; this man is subject to fits of sanity, thought to have twoarms, orbe absolutely (h)armless.

PUBLIC RELATIONS DIRECTOR

This bevy of beauties can usually be found scattered aroundthe ASBoffices typing innu merable memos, committee notes and revi sions of everything fromASB by laws to inter office love/hate mail. An everchanging honor guard to the ASB phones and files boxes. We admire their capabilities in an everchanging world. ASB SECRETARIES

Inter-Club CouncilChairman: GuyWebb INTER-CLUB COUNCIL DIRECTOR Guy Webb - usually greeted with a nauseating 'Hey Guy' at least once a day, this man still manages to do his job. Always busy looking for a Brooks Bros, or Neiman Marcus sale,Guy is responsible for co ordinating A.S.B. wardrobes with a few individualis tic exceptions (you know who you are!). He is also the official representative of the collective interest of the I.C.C. and amember ofthe Budget Committee, Pro gram Board, andSenate. In his spare time, Guy goes crocodile hunting in the swamps of Guilin's and Laub's apartment.
