Hundreds of Letters, Telegrams, Other Messages Received Although the Most Rev- erend Bishop had expressed the desire for a modest and quiet observation of the tenth anniversary of his installation as first Bishop of San Diego, the word was disseminated through the pages of The Southern Cross, and messages of congratulations and other expressions of loyalty continue to arrive at the Chancery office. The anniversary was noted by the Most Reverend Bishop on Wed- nesday, February 5, when he cele- brated a Solemn Pontifical Mass of Thanksgiving in St. Joseph's cathedral, held a reception for members of the clergy at his home in Mission hills, and was feted at a banquet in the El Cortez hotel. Included among the several hun- dred messages received by His Excellency were beautifully and elaborately illuminated spiritual bouquets from the children of the diocese, from the religious of the diocese, from the Father Serra club, and from the clubs in the San Diego Deanery Catholic Youth Organization. The children of the diocese, "with the assurance of their rev- erent affection and loyalty," offer- ed for His Excellency's intentions attendance at 12,042 Masses, 12,• 754 Communions, 12,844 rosaries, 60,217 acts of mortification, and 558,813, ejaculations, while the re- ligious, who offered "most prayer- ful congratulations," heard 3,500 Masses, received 3,300 Holy Com- munions, said 4,300 rosaries, made 20,400 acts, and said 81,000 ejacu- lations for his intentions. Members of the clubs in the San Diego Deanery Catholic Youth or- ganization pledged to dedicate their Masses, Holy Communions, and prayers on their regular Com· , munion Sundays during February in His Excellency's honor, and (Continued on Page 3)
