Dearly Beloved in Christ:
The rapid growth of Imperial, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties, which form the Diocese of San Diego, demands that constructive action be taken to provide educational and medical necessities. Our youth deserve the opportunity to help themselves toward a self-reliant future - to become useful in some field of endeavor. To preclude mental enslavement, we must equip our boys and girls with the simple and necessary truths which unify talents and strengthen human forces to tackle difficulties and dispel the confusion that now gathers on the horizon of their future. Enlightened leadership overcomes bigotry, intolerance, ignorance. It is vital to build below the surface. The University Foundation is comprehensive. It aims at collegiate courses, extended high school facilities, technical arts institutes, major and minor seminaries, hospitals, clinics and orphanages - eternal investments for you and your posterity. This long-range program must rely on your Catholic action. It will offer the fundamental structure and sure ground on which to tread, the best defense against spiritual collapse. Indeed, "The most divine of all works d i vine, is to cooperate with God in the salvation of souls." Invoking the guidance of the Holy Spirit and with loving confidence in the maternal intercession o~ the Blessed Virgin Mary, Seat o~ Wisdom, let us valiantly lay the foundation for a Catholic center of learning where generations yet unborn may be enkindled with the love of God and man. With an affectionate blessing, I remain Sincerely, +- Bishop of San Diego
