From Rio to Johannesburg

Ten significant years have passed from the groundbreaking Earth Summit in Rio de

Janeiro in 1992 to the pending World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannes-

burg in 2002.

The outcome of Rio 1992 was the Rio Declaration and

Agenda 21, which were adopted by more than 178

nations. GRID-Arendal's work relates to many of the areas

outlined in the two documents.

We have progressed from creating the first electronic

State of the Environment report for Norway to supporting

41 countries in making their own reports. We have helped

14 cities all over the world to produce their own environ-

mental reports on the Internet. We are now working on

reports for counties and provinces. We have produced

extensive web sites, reports, and graphics and provided

our workshop expertise to help communicate about the

environment in the Arctic area, Central and Eastern

Europe, and the Baltic region. We are also presenting new

initiatives for Africa and South America in Johannesburg.

All along we have worked closely with our international

and invaluable partners in UNEP, governments, regions,

scientists, NGOs and other organisations.

GRID-Arendal will present new and better services at the

summit in Johannesburg. Here the focus will be on turning

plans into action. GRID-Arendal is looking forward to doing

our bit in the future.
