George Heriot’s School

is one of the historic

landmarks of the city of

Edinburgh. It is recognised

as an important and

outstanding example

of Scots Renaissance

architecture, displaying

early 17

th

century stone

carvings. The School

is named after George

Heriot, a goldsmith in

Edinburgh. George Heriot

lost all of his children and

he decided to turn his

mind to providing help to

educate the children of his

home town, Edinburgh.

The University

of Edinburgh is one of the

most noted universities in

Scotland. It was founded

in 1583 as ‘the Town’s

College’.The University

has slowly grown and

established more and more

faculties.The University

is particularly know for its

school of medicine.The

English naturalist Charles

Darwin studied medicine

there, and the University

has many other famous

alumni including the

novelist SirWalter Scott

and the author of the Harry

Potter series JK Rowling.

Greyfriar’s Kirkyard is filled

with history. It belongs to

the Greyfriar’s Kirk, and in

1526 the former convent

garden was granted to be

used as a burial ground.

The graveyard has had

many famous names

buried there. Now visitors

have started visiting the

grave of Tom Riddle, who

many Harry Potter fans

believe may have inspired

the name of JK Rowling’s

famous villain Voldemort.

The National Museum

of Scotland is one of the

top 10 visitor attractions

in the UK, and it is in the

top 20 of the most visited

museums and galleries in

the world. The Museum

houses diverse collections

with over 20 000 pieces

telling the history of

Scotland, showing the

wonders of nature, world

cultures and science and

discovery. Today National

Museums Scotland also

includes the National

Museum of Flight, the

National War Museum and

the National Museum

of Rural Life.
