Edinburgh

Excursion

Museum

of Edinburgh

5

The Museum of Edinburgh is the

city’s treasure box. It is a maze

of historic rooms crammed

full of iconic objects from the

capital’s past. In the Museum

you can discover more about

Edinburgh’s past, its people,

crafts and trades and the

beautiful objects they created,

and the city itself.

The Museum is located in

a series of interconnected 16

th

and 17

th

century buildings.

Palace

of Holyroodhouse

7

The Palace of Holyroodhouse

is Her Majesty The Queen’s

official residence in Scotland. It

was founded as a monastery in

the early 12

th

century, and it is

associated with the turbulent

past of Scotland. Today the

Palace is the setting for

State ceremonies and official

entertaining, including the

Queen’s Holyrood week, when

Her Majesty carries out a wide

range of official engagements

in Scotland at the end of June.

Each year, The Queen and

The Duke of Edinburgh entertain

around 8 000 guests from all

over Scotland.

Calton Hill

8

Calton Hill is a hill in central

Edinburgh, and it offers some

of the best views of the city.

The hill houses several iconic

monuments and buildings,

including the National

Monument, the Dugald Stewart

Monument, Nelson’s Monument,

the Old Royal High School,

and the City Observatory. This

UNESCOWorld Heritage Site

includes the acropolis, which

is an unfinished monument. It

was meant to be a replica of

the Parthenon in Athens, as a

memorial to those who died in

the Napoleonic Wars, but funds

ran dry before the monument

was finished.

Scottish Parliament

Building

6

The Scottish Parliament

Building sits at the foot of

Edinburgh’s famous Royal Mile.

It is constructed from a mixture

of steel, oak and granite, and

the complex building is one of

the most innovative designs in

Britain today. The construction

of the building started in 1999.

It is the home of the Scottish

Parliament, and they held their

first debate in this new building

in 2004, the same year when

Queen Elizabeth formally

opened the building. The

Scottish Parliament Building is

a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site.
