Eastbridge Hospital
& Greyrfriars Chapel

Eastbridge Hospital was built
in the 12th century to provide
overnight accommodation
for poor pilgrims, soldiers
and local societies. Today the
Hospital provides Almhouse
accommodation for elderly
people. It currently has 8 flats
and they are all occupied. The
residents of the hospital are
a Christian community who
worship together in the chapels
and welcome visitors.
The Hospital has a chapel,
Greyrfriars Chapel. The chapel
is free to enter to anyone who
wishes and inside the chapel you
can find a visitors book to sign.
The Chapel has an exhibition on
the lower floor where you can
learn more about the history
of the Hospital, the Chapel and
Canterbury.
Dane John
Gardens

The historic Dane John Gardens
date back to 1551, but before
that it was a Roman cemetery,
which was converted into a
castle in the 11th century and
then later into a civic park.
Within the gardens you can find
a safe play area for children,
a newly built bandstand, which
is used as a venue for traditional
concerts throughout the
summer, and a fountain halfway
through the shaded walk along
the avenue of lime trees.
On top of the mound you can
enjoy the excellent views
of the city of Canterbury.
The Old Buttermarket
& Christ Church Gate

The Christ Church Gate is a
Norman gateway, and it was built
in 1517. It is a dramatic feature
of the old Buttermarket and it
acts as the main entrance to
the Canterbury Cathedral seen
behind it. Canterbury is probably
most famous for the Cathedral.
Thousands of people travel yearly
from all over the world to visit
the world famous structure. It is
also one of the oldest Christian
structures in England. It is the
Cathedral of the Archbishop of
Canterbury,who is the leader
of the Church of England and
symbolic leader of the worldwide
