Princes Street Gardens is a
public park created in the
early 19th century following
the creation of the New Town.
The Gardens was built where
the Nor Loch was located. The
park has a wide collection of
three different types of public
monuments and memorials.
The first type commemorates
influential Scottish men of
the 18th and 19th centuries.
The second group remember
those who died fighting in wars,
including the Scots American
War Memorial. The third
group include miscellaneous
sculptures and monuments,
such as the Ross Fountain.
St Andrew Square’s

St Andrew Square’s construction
began in the late 18th century
as the first part of the New
Town. It became one of the most
fashionable residential areas. At
the end of the 19th century St
Andrew Square evolved into the
commercial centre of the city.
The east end of George Street,
where the Square is located,
used to be known as the hub
of Edinburgh’s financial world
but is nowmainly known for its
restaurants and designer shops.
In the centre of the Square
is a Roman column, Melville
Monument, which was built in
memory of Henry Dundas, the
first Viscount Melville.
Scott Monument

The Scott Monument is the
largest monument built to
commemorate a writer in
the world. The monument
remembers Sir Walter Scott,
who was one of Scotland’s
greatest novelists. The
monument was built in the mid
19th century and it houses a
museum roomwhere you can
learn more about Sir Walter
Scott and the monument. The
monument is 61 meters high
and there are 287 steps to
the top where there are great
views of Edinburgh. There are
64 statues on the monument,
which are mostly characters
from Scott’s novels with some
figures from Scottish history.
