began in the late 18th century

as the first part of the New

fashionable residential areas. At

the end of the 19th century St

commercial centre of the city.

The east end of George Street,

where the Square is located,

used to be known as the hub

of Edinburgh’s financial world

but is nowmainly known for its

restaurants and designer shops.

In the centre of the Square

is a Roman column, Melville

memory of Henry Dundas, the

first Viscount Melville.

largest monument built to

commemorate a writer in

the world. The monument

remembers Sir Walter Scott,

who was one of Scotland’s

greatest novelists. The

monument was built in the mid

19th century and it houses a

museum roomwhere you can

learn more about Sir Walter

Scott and the monument. The

monument is 61 meters high
