Annual Events and Highlights
Berlin's calendar is filled with social, sports and cultural events: from the annual Berlinale Film
Festival to dance, theatre, opera performances and sport events. Please find below a few
examples:
+ Internationale Luftfahrt Ausstellung (ILA) – International Aerospace Exhibition, takes
place in spring every two years on the southern areas of Berlin Schönefeld Airport

+ Karneval der Kulturen der Welt – Carneval of the Cultures, colourful parade and a street
party of the "Cultures of the World" (www.karneval-berlin.de – English version available)
+ Classic Open Air – live classical music being presented open air in summer at
Gendarmenmarkt
+ Lange Nacht der Museen – Long Night of Museums, more than 40 museums are open on
twice a year at least until midnight
+ Berlin Marathon – this Marathon has become one of the most important marathons of the
world – English version available)
+ Berlin's Christmas Fairs – Christmas Season starts in Berlin at the end of November,
through December. Many Christmas fairs are inviting with the smell of "Glühwein", ginger
bread and burned almonds
- With its traditional and historic atmosphere, the nostalgic Christmas fair at the opera
house "Unter den Linden” is unique in Berlin
- The central location of the Christmas fair around the "Kaiser Wilhelm-Memorial-Church"
invites visitors to continue shopping on the Kurfürstendamm.
- Another Christmas fair is on Alexanderplatz with stage programs and merry-go-rounds
- A traditional Christmas atmosphere can be found at the Christmas fair in Spandau,
which takes place in the whole Oldtown of Spandau. It is the largest Christmas fair in
Europe
+ Berlin International Film Festival "Berlinale" – takes place on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz (next to
Potsdam Square) where contributions from all over the world compete to gain the
"Goldenen Bären" – English version available)
