Speak Out

On 5 January 2016, National
Offices’ first week back, we
posted what we thought was
a fun, interesting story from
the Conversation website
titled “Togs or swimmers?
Why Australians use different
words to describe the same
things”. Proving speech
pathologists never rest (even
during the holiday period) the
post was a ratings bonanza.
It reached over 22,800
people, received over 140
likes, was shared 53 times
and was commented on over
20 times. Speechies love to
talk words, even if it is debating
a potato cake or scallop.
Two days before Christmas
a story was published in the
media about a homeless
man named Matte Dunn,
which detailed his life on the
streets of Melbourne, his
emerging tourist information
business and his desire to
study his Masters in Speech
Pathology. On Twitter, where
engagements are typically
smaller for SPA, it was
retweeted six times and 'liked' eight.
The Association has long
been an advocate for
improving the lives of people
with communication and
swallowing difficulties.
3 December 2015, on
International Day of People
with Disability, we showed
our support on Instagram
and our efforts were well
received with over 70 likes.
Engage with us and help
spread the word of our vital
industry.
