Did You Know . . .
Even though Labor Day originated in Canada in 1872, the first Labor Day
celebration in the United States was in New York City's Union Square on Sept. 5,
1882. It was planned by the Central Labor Union to appease city workers after
numerous strikes and violence that occurred over the 12 hour work day. Labor
Day has been celebrated on the first Monday of September every year since
President Grover Cleveland declared that day Labor Day in 1894.
