TENNIS

The Women'sTennis teamjust came off its best season

yet. Its overall record of 22-16 was one of the largest and

toughest schedulesin the countrywith opponents suchas

UCLA, USC, Stanford, Pepperdine, and Clemson. The team

finished the Southern California Athletic Association

(SCAA) with a 9-3 mark and the conference Championship.

Two of the wins were over UCSB, who finished with a

national ranking of #17. Diane Farrell, USD's #1 singles

player, finished with an 11-0 singles record, 10-1 doubles

record, and Athlete of the Year in the SCAA. To top things

off, coach ScottMcCarthy received Coachof the Yearhon­

ors in the conference. The highly successful season was

achieved with asquad of seven freshmenand three sopho­

mores. This year's addition of Naini Kouza (#3 ranking

junior in Japan; 1980 Ojai Jr.College Champ) should help to

make the teameven stronger. Returning sophomores Mari-

Carmen Casta and Judy Newman, and junior Geralyn Sulli­

van (with overall singles records of22-14, 24-13, and 23-14,

respectively) alsopromise tomake USD'sWomen's Tennis

team oneof the premier teams inthe SCAA.
