Short acting benzodiazepine

2-5 minutes

Indications

Seizure

Agitation / Combativeness

Adult Dose

Seizure: 10 mg IM only, consider 5 mg if frail elderly or chronic illness

Agitation / Combativeness: 4 mg IM only

Pediatric Dose

5 mg IM if > 40 kg (88 lbs)

2.5 mg IM if 13-40 kg (28.6-88 lbs)

0.1 mg/kg IM if < 13kg (28.6 lbs), Maximum 2.5 mg

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity, glaucoma, acute alcoholic intoxication with depressed vital signs

Adverse Reactions

Fluctuations in vital signs were most frequently seen. Decreased tidal volume and/or respiratory rate, apnea,

variations in blood pressure

Precautions

Doses should be decreased in frail elderly and debilitated patients.

Considerations

Consider reducing the dose on frail elderly and debilitated patients. These patients may take longer to recover

from the drug. Always have airway equipment available when using.
