REDD+, 2012

The theme of Zambia’s Sixth National Development

Plan (2011-2015) is ‘Sustained Economic Growth

and Poverty Reduction’. The plan focuses on policies,

strategies and programmes that will contribute

significantly to the realization of broad-based pro-

poor growth, employment creation and human

development.

The plan’s objectives within the environment sector

are to:

• Strengthen the existing policy and legal

framework for effective environmental

management;

• Strengthen environmental protection and

management; and,

Sixth National Development Plan

• Promote effective management of the

environment and Zambia’s natural resources in

key sectors (GRZ, 2010).

The environment sector has implemented

various programmes in line with the Sixth

National Development Plan. Key among these

is the strengthening of existing policy and legal

frameworks through the Environmental Management

Act No. 12 (2011). The Water Resources Management

Act and the National Water Policy were also enacted

to ensure that water resources are efficiently

managed and regulated.
