Maps

• Create an ecology map of Belize. First, draw the shape of the country, adding major rivers

and mountains. Then, in the margins, put pictures of the trees and animals mentioned in

chapter one. Under each, write a sentence of descriptive identification.

• Draw a map of the coast of Belize. Identify major reefs, atolls, and cayes. Define what these

natural features are.

Book Reports

Write a one-page book report on any of the following titles:

Timothy of the Caye

by Theodore Taylor

The Cay

by Theodore Taylor

A General History of Pyrates

by Daniel Defoe (Manuel Schonhorn, editor)

Under the Black Flag: The Romance and the Reality of Life Among the Pirates

by David Cordingly

Flashcards

Using the glossary in this book, create flashcards. Put the term on one side and the definition

on the other. Practice with the cards in pairs. Then, choose two teams of three. Select a referee

to say the term out loud, and then call on someone to give the definition. The referee’s decision

is final. Award points for each correct answer. You can also read the definition, and ask for the

correct term instead!

Projects

• Using a picture of a Mayan temple, build a small-scale model or show what one of the

famous sites looks like from the air.

• Using a picture again, re-create a Mayan glyph using model clay. A glyph is a symbolic

figure or character carved into something, for example, stone. Make it about the size of a

textbook lying flat.

• Choose either the plants or animals of Belize and make mobiles of them to hang in class.
