Yellow polyethylene
pipe with a black core
Polyethylene pipe specialist GPS PE
Pipe Systems has launched New Yellow,
claimed to be the first UK-manufactured
yellow polyethylene pipe range with a
black core for gas installations.
The move builds on the success of the
company’s New Blue range of pipes for
the water industry, which was launched
in 2012 and is now fully operational
in numerous utilities improvement
schemes throughout the UK.
Designed to meet the current and future
challenges of the gas industry, New
Yellow delivers a number of additional
benefits.
Offering improved resistance to slow
crack growth (SCG) in larger diameter
pipes, New Yellow also provides greater
continuity and stability within the supply
chain.
With a co-extruded wall of an outer
yellow layer and black core designed
to be consistent across the range,
from 75 to 225mm diameter in a PE80
configuration and 250 to 630mm in a
PE100CR (crack resistant) configuration,
the New Yellow range is compatible with
GPS’s existing fittings portfolio and fully
compliant with GIS PL2-2.
Noel Hughes from
GPS commented,
“GPS PE Pipe
Systems continues
to be the UK pioneer
of polyethylene pipe
solutions and has
once again delivered
a first within the UK
gas industry with
the manufacture
and launch of our
new range of yellow gas pipes with a
black core. This innovation offers both
technical and productivity benefits to
the gas sector, building on the market
leading success of our Excel PE pipe
range, and forms part of our long-term
strategy of product development, aimed
at delivering greater flexibility and wider
specification choices for the industry.”
With no need to remove an outer
polypropylene skin prior to installation
– a process that is often difficult at
low temperatures – use of New Yellow
not only avoids the risk of outer skin
delamination during installation,
but also provides greater flexibility
in handling, storage and installation
practices, and simplifies the ‘squeeze
off’ process. PE80 New Yellow also
offers handling and storage benefits
along with increased flexibility, which
makes the pipe particularly suitable for
rough terrain and ‘no dig’ applications,
where it may need to provide sufficient
flex to avoid obstacles or follow the
natural contours on-site.
New Yellow has already been
successfully installed in a number of
schemes, notably in the city of London
where 630mm SDR 26 has been
selected due to New Yellow’s handling
and installation benefits.
A 4km cast iron abandonment scheme
in Maidenhead, UK, has also benefited
from the new range of gas pipes.

Flexible rubber coupling for
non-pressure stainless steel
Mücher Dichtungen is part of the
Mission Rubber group of companies,
the originator over 50 years ago of the
non-pressure flexible rubber coupling
for the sewerage, drainage and
plumbing industries. Mücher couplings
offer a long-term joint for joining pipes
made from different materials such as
stainless steel, cast iron or plastic.
The latest innovation is the Mücher-
Genius™, which is available from DN100
to DN300 and joints all pipes within one
dimension. The Mücher-Genius has two
integrated bushes that can be folded
out and removed on one or both
sides, depending on the application.
The connection can be made
immediately and site work can
continue without delay. Whether
connecting steel to steel, plastic to
cast iron, or structural walled plastic
pipes to stainless steel, the newMücher-
Genius is an option.
The Mücher-Genius resists an internal
water pressure of 2.5 bar, and the
EPDM rubber sleeve offers a permanent
temperature resistance of -40° to +120°C.
