Been pining for something new and Team Fortress
2-ish to satiate your desire for squad-based combat?
Say hello to Overwatch! It’s from Blizzard and we’d say
that it’s totally teamtacular if that didn’t sound so naff.
Bulging with hero characters ranging from a potbellied
slob, to a Robocop, to a chick who looks like Scooby-
Doo’s Velma with Elsa from Frozen’s powers, you select
from three modes, gear up, join a squad of six and take on others,
cooperating with your teammates in order to save Overwatch’s very
existence after a freefall from grace. If your character sucks you can
switch to another upon dying or at spawn, too. Honestly, there’s just
no loyalty in the world today!

It’s time to make a choice – Birthright or Conquest? In
an epic scuffle of Romeo and Juliet-like proportions,
you’re required to select a side from two kingdoms that
are verging upon war. Do you battle the corrupt king of
Nohr in Birthright, or fight the fetid system from within
in Conquest? Of course you can sit on the fence with
the additional downloadable Revelations campaign, but where’s the
fun in that?! It’s a triple whammy of classic Fire Emblem turn-based
strategy, with each path offering a complete game and story. Create
your own avatar with which to enter battle, then command an army
of archers, knights, mages, and more. Have you the tactical nous to
emerge victorious?

Can you imagine Keith Richards settling down with
a pipe and slippers, hanging with the missus on the
couch watching Downton Abbey? We can’t, and we
can’t imagine gun-toting action-adventurer extraordinaire
Nathan Drake doing it either. Yet, a few years after
the events of Drake’s Deception, he’s retired from the
fortune-hunting life to settle down with Elena Fisher.
But when his brother – who was thought to be long dead – shows
up, it’s time to trot the globe again in search of pirate booty. Created
specifically for the PS4, A Thief’s End is a graphical powerhouse – and
the actual game’s pretty bloody impressive too!

As every gamer knows, everything old is regularly
new again. Such is the case here as the big daddy
of the first-person shooter genre gets a 21st century
overhaul, brandishing that other buzzy word, ‘reboot’.
DOOM was state of the art in 1993, and aims to be
just as jaw-droppingly amazing in 2016. Beyond the
obvious leaps and bounds graphically and sonically,
everybody’s favourite thing about the game – the crazy,
big-arse weaponry – is heading further over the top, while the array of
demonic entities to send back whence they came have all been given
wonderfully gruesome makeovers. Bigger, harder, faster, more – hey
DOOM, welcome back!
