Appointment of Peace Commissioners.

The Adaptation of Enactments Act, 1922,

Section 6, deprived Justices of the Peace of

the power of exercising their legal functions.

The Minister of Home Affairs, acting under

Section 4 of the District Justices (Temporary

Provisions) Act, 1923, has appointed Peace

Commissioners throughout the Irish Free

State.

The powers and authorities of a Peace

Commissioner consist of

(a)

signing sum

monses ;

(b)

signing warrants;

(c)

admin

istering oaths,

and

taking declarations,

affirmations and informations;

(d)

com

mitting dangerous lunatics and idiots to

lunatic asylums, under Section 10 of the

Lunacy (Ireland) Act, 1867;

(e)

signing

certificates for the admission of lunatics and

idiots to lunatic asylums; (/) signing the

certificates required by Section 2 of the

Registration of Clubs (Ireland) Act, 1904.

Irish Solicitors' Golflng Society.

The above Society held its annual Com

petition for the Challenge Cup at Dollymount,

on May 17th ;

fifty-eight members took part.

The result being :—T. Early, 81 ; A. Lloyd-

Blood, 81 ;

Plunket Kenney, 82 ;

P. J.

Byrne, 83 ;

and J. T. Hamerton, 83.

In

the replay, A. Lloyd-Blood won. The prize

for best gross score was won by P. Kenney, 91.

In the afternoon the sweepstake foursomes

were won by Messrs. C. St. G. Orpen and

A. D. Orr, with Messrs. English and Horan

second.

The Annual General Meeting of the Society-

was held in the Club House, and the following

officers were elected for the ensuing year :—

A Dinner was held in the evening, at which

over fifty members attended, presided over

by Mr. Basil Thompson.

A very large entry was received for the

Cup presented by the Council of the Incor

porated Law Society of Ireland, to be played

for by match play. The following is the

Intermediate Examination.

The July Intermediate Examination will

be held on Monday, the second day of July,

1923, at 10 o'clock, a.m., in the Royal

College of Surgeons, Stephen's Green, Dublin.

Notices should be lodged in the Secretary's

Office, 33 Molesworth Street, Dublin, before

Tuesday, 26th June.
