Inspected 7,525 business properties and
provided 7,063 safety educational
inspection pamphlets to the business
proprietors. This ongoing initiative
bolsters the City’s efforts to improve the
resiliency of businesses in the event of
a disaster or major incident. The
Business Emergency Preparedness
Program, included delivery of 6,966
targeted disaster recovery educational
pamphlets;
Held a Fire Prevention Week in
Partnership with Home Depot at two
different locations with information on
preventing and responding to fires,
maintaining smoke alarms and
developing home escape plans;
Delivered 71 Surrey Neighbourhood
Emergency Preparedness presentations
to 1,919 attendees. In addition, staffed
15 emergency preparedness booths at
various fairs, resulting in exposure to
10,264 additional individuals;
HomeSafe program resources were
successfully redeployed to focus on
targeted Community Safety Initiatives:
Installed 615 free smoke alarms,
and conducted 639 HomeSafe
Inspections including the Smoke
Alarm initiative inspections;
Participated in 4 forums engaging
605 seniors in safety education;
Promoted a smoke alarm
awareness campaign directed to
2,974 homeowners who visited
City Hall during the annual
property tax season; and
Coordinated 21 Level 1 emergency
support service responses with 53 dis-
placed residents; and 2, Level 2 emer-
gency support service responses with
172 displaced residents compared to
the same period in 2016.
