Retired police motorcyclist Philippe
Deneubourg, from Section France, and his
partner Sylviane visited the IPA House near St
Andrews in May.
Philippe, who is passionate about Scottish
history and all things Scottish, explained to
Pauline and me that he was determined to go
home with a full dress kilt outfit.
During his short visit he was able to fulfil most
of his ambition. With the assistance of local
member Rod McNeill, he did go home with an
Argyll jacket and waistcoat, sporran, kilt socks
and brogues.
The kilt itself was a different matter. Philippe
wanted a kilt in the IPA Tartan, and that is not
something that can be bought ‘off the shelf’. The
rights to the IPA Tartan are owned by 1 Region
(Scotland) and all matters concerning the tartan
are overseen by Jim Nisbet from the 1 Region
Committee.
Jim e-mailed me detailed instructions on not
just the required measurements, but how they
were to be taken: with the most important
measurements requiring Philippe to be in a
kneeling position! It was Pauline who took the
very real responsibility of obtaining accurate
measurements.
In the event the kilt was duly delivered to France
four weeks later, and Philippe confesses to
being quite emotional and very proud to be
able to wear the IPA Tartan. As for the accuracy
of the measurements - you will see from the
photograph that the kilt fits Philippe perfectly.
While in Scotland, Philippe and Sylviane also
enjoyed time in Edinburgh in the company of
John O'Lone and Rod.
As well as being interested in Scottish
history, Phillippe is an expert on the WW1
and WW2 battles in Belgium and Northern
France. Albeit he lives in France, his home is
only 15 kilometres from Ypres.
Philippe has intimated that he would be very
happy to escort members around the battlefields
and war graves. Should any members wish to
take up Philippe's offer, please contact me in the
