Around 1966, Yala Swamp was largely intact, with

very little degradation, but by 1973 destruction of the

Swamp had become more noticeable, particularly in

the north and south-west (next to Lake Kanyaboli);

this included some extensive burn scars, particularly in

the southeast of the Swamp. By 2001, a large section

of the Swamp had been converted to crop farming (as

indicated by the yellow arrows).
