Measurement and detection
of lumps and neckdowns
In addition to Sikora’s classic diameter
gauges of the Laser Series 2000, the
company offers the high-end devices of
the Laser Series 6000.
These diameter-measuring devices are
specifically designed for sophisticated
customer requirements that exceed the
classic demands for quality control in the
wire and cable industry.
Up to 5,000 measurements per second,
all with extremely high single value
precision, allow for an optimum line
control and provide reliable statistical
data.
The gauge heads measure the diameter
of wires and cables with precision and
repeatability. Sikora offers three gauge
head models for product diameters from
0.2 to 78mm. The Laser Series 6000 also
precisely measures transparent products.
The devices include an integrated LCD
display with control panel. This provides
the operator with diameter values at a
glance, directly at the measuring device.
At the control panel the diameter
nominal value can be entered and the
control module activated.
Via line speed or extruder rpm
the module controls the diameter
automatically to the specified value.
The high measuring rate of the diameter
devices also allows the detection of lumps
and neckdowns. With the two-in-one
system, investment costs are reduced.
In addition, there is more space in the
line, as only one gauge head has to be
installed.

The Laser 6040 XY for high-speed diameter
measurement and detection of lumps
A new ‘bullhead’ tubular strander for
armouring optical and special cables is
presented as an alternative to the classical
planetary or tubular stranders.
Caballé has upgraded and improved the
existing technology of bullhead stranders
with some major improvements:
•
Number of steel wires up to 36
•
Pay-off bobbins: DIN 500-630
•
Central tube reel size: DIN 1600-2500
•
Tension control core by motor/dancer
system
•
Dual
compensation
mechanical
system that keeps wire tension fully
constant
•
Optimal management/information of
alarms in the main screen with alarm
description and position (nº of payoff)
•
Maximum stranding speed: 500rpm
With this system the central core with the
fibre optics inside is paid off completely
straight with no twist occurring in the
product, so the resulting quality is the
same as with a planetary strander but
with much higher stranding speeds. In
the production mode the productivity
of this machine is up to five times higher
than a planetary strander.
The possibility to work with up to 36 wires
in a single pass makes this machine very
versatile, as well as a high productivity
line, being able to armour optical and
special cables with high tensile strength
steel wires.
The ‘bullhead feeder’ has been designed
to allow a wide range of working tensions,
which makes it suitable for a single steel
tube with fibres inside as well as for an
armoured cable with a first layer of steel
wires.
