hold

and

thus

render

a

hospital,

or other

places

for

the

sick,

free

from

unpleasant

smells.

For

butchers'

stalls,

fish-markets,

slaughter-houses,

sinks,

and

wherever

there

are

offensive

putrid

gases,

dissolve

copperas

and

sprinkle

it

about,

and

in

a

few

days

the

smell

will

pass

away.

If

a

cat,

rat,

or

mouse

dies

about

the

house,

and

sends

forth

an

offensive

gas,

place

some

dissolved

copperas

in

an

open

vessel

near

the

place

where

the

nuisance

is,

and

it

will

soon

purify

the

atmosphere.

lard,

take

1

pound

saltpetre,

and

1

pound

alum

;

rAix

and

pulverize

them

;

dissolve

the

saltpetre

and

alum

in

a

gill

of

boiling

water;

pour

the

compound

into

the

lard

before

it

is

quite

all

melted

;

stir

the

whole

until

it

boils

;

skim

oft'

what

rises

;

let

it

simmer

until

the

water

is

boiled

out,

or

until

it

ceases

to

throw

off

steam

;

pour

off

the

lard

as

soon

as

it

is

done,

and

clean

the

boiler

while

it

is

hot.

the

are

to

be

run,

you

may

com-

mence

immediately

dipped,

lard

cool

to

cake,

then

treat

it

as

you

would

tallow.
