render
a
hospital,

places

the
sick,
free
from
unpleasant
smells.
For
butchers'
stalls,
fish-markets,
slaughter-houses,
sinks,
and
wherever
there
are
offensive
putrid
gases,
dissolve
copperas
and
sprinkle
it
about,
and
in
a
few
days
the
smell
will
pass
away.
If
a
cat,
rat,
or
mouse
dies
about
the
house,
and
sends
forth
an
offensive
gas,
place
some
dissolved
copperas
in
an
open
vessel
near
the
place
where
the
nuisance
is,
and
it
will
soon
purify
the
atmosphere.

lard,
take

pound
saltpetre,
and
1
pound
alum
;
rAix
and
pulverize
them
;
dissolve
the
saltpetre
and
alum
in
a
gill
of
boiling
water;
pour
the
compound
into
the
lard
before
it
is
quite
all
melted
;
stir
the
whole
until
it
boils
;
skim
oft'
what
rises
;
let
it
simmer
until
the
water
is
boiled
out,
or
until
it
ceases
to
throw
off
steam
;
pour
off
the
lard
as
soon
as
it
is
done,
and
clean
the
boiler
while
it
is
hot.

the
candles
are
to
be
run,
you
may
com-
mence
immediately
;
if
to
be
dipped,
let
the
lard
cool
to
a
cake,
and
then
treat
it
as
you
would
tallow.
