Suite of digital hand tools
Precision measurement specialist
Optical Metrology Services (OMS) has
launched a comprehensive portfolio of
compact digital hand tools. Developed
to improve project efficiencies in the
field, the range ensures fast, accurate
and repeatable electronic assessment
of pipeline geometry.
Durable, portable and designed with the
user in mind, the suite comprises eight
individual quality assurance tools.
Developed in-house by OMS’s team
of precision measurement technology
experts, each unit offers a real-time
solution to overcome challenging
pipeline fit-up and welding requirements.
From pipe ovality, end squareness
and pipe straightness, to girth weld
integrity and bevel alignment, the next-
generation portfolio provides a solution
for on-site pipe measurement. Videos
highlighting the tools’ capabilities in
detail, as well as a brief introduction to
their application, are available to watch
at
www.youtube.com/omsmeasureCommenting on the launch, Hugh
Davies, director of client solutions
at OMS, said, “With precision
measurement key to the success of any
pipeline project, we wanted to introduce
a comprehensive solution to help quality
control managers, welders, pipe mills
and coating yards to ensure that the
various pipe features are all within
specified project tolerances.”
The range of eight tools consists of
Pipe Straightness Tool, Closed-gap
HiLo Tool, Open-gap HiLo Tool, Girth
Weld Assurance Tool, Ends Squareness
Tool, Bevel Tool, End Hooking Tool and
Manual Tool.

The release of the TracStar
®
1200 brings
the largest pipe fusion capability to date
in McElroy’s line of self-propelled, track-
mounted fusion machines.
The TracStar 1200 has many of the same
benefits as the smaller models, but with
some major upgrades. It features an
advanced emission control engine that
burns ultra-low-sulphur diesel to meet
the EPA’s latest Tier 4 standards. The
cowling has also been redesigned so
that technicians have better and quicker
access to the engine for maintenance.
“The TracStar line was quickly embraced
when it was launched 18 years ago
and its design continues to improve
based on the input we receive from the
field,” said the company’s president,
Chip McElroy. “The ability to propel
the machine from joint to joint has
always been a major selling point and
this feature will help meet the growing
demand for fusing large-diameter pipe.”
The TracStar 1200 butt fuses pipe from
450 to 1,200mmOD (16" to 48"), and can
traverse almost any terrain, including
mud, loose soil, snow and gradients up
to 30 per cent. It is self-contained with
an on-board generator for powering the
hydraulic pivoting heater and facer. The
three- or four-jaw convertible carriage is
easily removable for in-ditch use.
Other new features include hydraulic
outriggers for machine stability and
levelling, an ergonomic operator
platform and remote engine stop/start
capabilities.
