N
intendo were the first
appointment we had on
the show floor at E3 2017,
and arguably one of our most
anticipated.
Of course, this year the Switch
was at the forefront of their
presentations, with everything we
went hands-on with being playable
on the new home console/
portable hybrid. Understandably,
we made a beeline for one of our
most anticipated games of E3 –
Super Mario Odyssey
.
A 3D open-world game,
Odyssey
is quite similar to
Super
Mario 64
, or even
Galaxy
, but
brings a new gameplay mechanic
into the mix. Introducing Cappy –
that’s right, Mario’s trusted hat has
come to life, and is
now more of a tool
for you to use in
the world. You
can throw it to
collect coins or
take out enemies,
or even just use it
as a trampoline to
jump off and reach
otherwise inaccessible
areas. Oh, and you can also
turn into some enemies by
throwing the cap at them –
Bullet Bills included.
As the first new entry in the
Mario series in a while,
Odyssey
is bound to be pretty high on the
lists of those who own a Switch,
especially considering the small
slate of games it had at launch.
We got to check out both the
desert and city worlds, and trust
us when we say you’re going to
want to invest plenty of time into
this one. There’s a lot of climbing
and secret-discovering to do,
including scaling to the top of a
skyscraper. The best bit? Mario
doesn’t take fall damage, so you
can bet we jumped off the top of
that bad boy. 9.5/10 for dismount.
Next up was
Pokken
Tournament DX
, which is
essentially a port of the Pokémon
fighting game from the Wii U.
