1.0 POLICY
T
he City of Greensboro provides extended leave, separate from other leave benefits, to help
protect the financial security of long-term employees in certain situations when they have a
serious illness or injury requiring a lengthy absence from work.
2.0 PURPOSE
T
he City recognizes that circumstances may occur where a long-term employee, through no
fault of his own, has an inadequate amount of accrued leave to cover extended absences due
to personal serious illness or injury. This leave is intended to help protect the financial security
of long-term employees during an extended recovery if the employee can reasonably be expected
to recover and return to work. City Manager’s leave is a limited benefit available only in certain
restricted situations. It is not an entitlement and is awarded only if clearly warranted as outlined in
this policy.
3.0 SCOPE
This policy applies to all benefit eligible employees who have served the City for at least five consecutive years
in a benefit eligible position.
4.0 DEFINITIONS
4.1
City Manager’s Leave
- City Manager’s leave is leave granted by the City Manager to a
long-term employee, who through no fault of his own, has an inadequate amount of other
leave benefits to cover an extended absence from work due to a serious illness or injury.
4.2
Benefit Eligible
- Full time and part time employees (PT) who are eligible for coverage/
participation in the City’s benefit programs in addition to legally mandated coverage.

5.1 City Manager’s leave is only available for the employee’s personal illness or injury. City
Manager’s leave is not available for use when the employee needs to be absent from work to attend
to an ill family member.
5.2 An employee who has served the City for at least five consecutive years in a benefit eligible
position meets the minimum eligibility requirements for City Manager’s leave.
5.3 The total amount of City Manager’s leave for a full time employee will not exceed 1,056 hours
during the course of his career with the City. If a full time employee moves to a part time position,
