Leave for the Birth of a Child

1.0 POLICY

T

he City of Greensboro provides benefit eligible employees up to 12 weeks of paid and/or

unpaid leave for the birth of a child and to care for the child after birth, in any consecutive 12

month period. At the end of the leave period the employee will be reinstated to their previous job

or a job of like classification and pay.

ther (not benefit eligible) employees who meet the Family Medical and Leave Act (FMLA)

requirements will be given up to 12 weeks of time off but will not be eligible for paid leave.

2.0 PURPOSE

T

he City supports employees in addressing a balance between their jobs and their family

concerns. The City complies with the guidelines of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

and considers these requirements to be minimums. This policy explains how the City fulfills

its obligations under FMLA for employees who give birth and the additional benefits the City

provides in some cases.

3.0 SCOPE

This policy applies to employees in all benefit eligible positions. Other (not benefit eligible) employees are

not covered by the leave in this policy but are eligible for unpaid Family and Medical Leave if they meet the

qualifying requirements.

4.0 DEFINITIONS

4.1

Maternity Leave

- The period of time of up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for the mother

to give birth, recover and care for the newborn. The temporary disability portion of the

maternity leave is treated as any other illness. Six weeks (or more) of the maternity leave may

be paid sick leave as detailed in this policy.

4.2

Temporary Disability

- The period of time from the birth of the baby through the

physical recovery of the mother as determined by the employee’s health care provider,

normally four to six weeks and is the period of time when the mother is physically unable

to work due to the birth. The temporary disability may be paid sick leave as detailed in this

policy.

4.3

Paternity Leave

- A period up to 12 weeks during any consecutive 12 months of unpaid

leave for the father to care for the baby. Up to three weeks of the paternity leave may be

charged to sick-family leave as detailed in this policy.
